LinkSys BEFSR41 router DNS error

Postby Un4g1v3n » Thu Dec 16, 2004 3:35 am

The LinkSys BEFSR41 router is a 4-port router with a WAN and Uplink port.

I uplink my DSL modem intot he 'Uplink' port on the router. Then I connect my pc and my xbox into port 1 and 2. However, when TWO or more connections are hooked up to the router, the 'Ethernet' light on my modem flashes on, and then off, then on and then off.. etc.. It loses connection when this happens. If only one connection is set up to the router, it works fine.

Icontacted LinkSys on their LiveChat on their website, and was told to uplink my modem into the WAN port and use port 1 and 2 for my pc and xbox. That seemed to work as the 'Ethernet' light on my modem was now solid. But now that it seems that problem is fixed, I can't connect to the internet on either xbox or pc. It says the DNS isnt correct.

I have a feeling I need to configure my router to use DSL and give it my username and password, but I dont have the configuration cd. They told me to use this ip address:
http://192.168.1.1 and then login into my router from there. But whenever I use that ip address, it says site cannot be found. Is there a way to download the Configuration Wizard off the internet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Notes: I already checked the linksys website and tried their quick installation and nothing worked.

Since you were switching your cables around on the router, it would be a good idea to shut everything down and turn off your router and modem for a couple of minutes to refresh it, making sure everything is in it's right plug. Turn it all back on after a couple minutes, that should work. Also, that IP address is correct for the Linksys modem, it should be accessable from the PC that it's connected to....

Hope it helps.... :)

EDIT: That router also has a built in NAT which acts as a firewall. On my Speedstream router I have to put in an IP address to disable my firewall while I'm connecting to certain games. I'm pretty sure that's the only way to change the settings on your router.

you need to turn off the XP firewall and or zone alarm, black ice etc. Then open explorer and go to 192.168.1.1

What usually throws people, is that in the login for the router when you access this page, no name is typed in, you skip to password and type in "admin." At this point your not on the internet, your inside your router.

first thing you want to do is change the password and/or include a login name.

Check for updates for the router and install them. Linksys has an excellent site for manuals and drivers.

good luck

Thats the thing. I cannot access the route like that. The IP brings up a 'Page Cannot Be Displayed' message.

check the device manager and see if the nic is disabled

If thats ok, go to run an type cmd (this is for xp) then from the prompt, type ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew
then try from the command prompt ping 127.0.0.1 you should get 4 returns if you don't the nic could be bad.

you could also remove and reinstall the drivers for the nic

I still suspect a firewall issue. remove the router from themodem connection and disable all the items in the startup tray and see if you can talk to the router
