Outlook - Cannot back-up my pst files *HELP*

Postby msiler » Tue Dec 21, 2004 2:22 pm

When I try to back-up or export my Backup, Archive or Mailbox.pst
files in Outlook 2000 I get a message that says "Cannot copy Mailbox: The
process cannot access the file because another process has locked a
portion of the file"
Once that msg appears I can go no further with the backing up process...

I have logged off (or think I have) Outlook and any other associated programs that might be using it, like Mcafee virus scan, Palm desktop and Hotsync

How do I find what other file(s) is locking or using a portion of my
outlook file and how do i shut it down?

Can this be repaired and if so how?

Thank you in advance for your help,

************************************************
I just ran "FREE FILE" which supposedly shows you what programs are "locking" the application...it came back showing that nothing was locking up Outlook. Odd

I also ran Scanpst (inbox repair tool) and I get a similar message to the original: "The file...mailbox.pst is in use by another application. Close Microsoft Outlook and all other mail enabled applications and tray again."

Task manager shows no sign of Outlook, Hotsync, Palm or Agendus Desktop. It does show 44 processes open. I can list them if someone thinks they need to see them to help me solve this issue.

Have you tried backing them up when in safe mode?

I would look for anything that has to do with MS Office and end task on what ever you find.
Your other option is to run msconfig from a command prompt and uncheck the Office startup.

It was Copernic Desktop Search that was locking up Outlook.
A newly installed program that i completely forgot about...

Thanks for all the help from the forum.
