Can't Install W2K SP4?

Postby msiler » Wed Dec 22, 2004 2:17 pm

The download goes fine.

The installation quits about 3/4 of the way through and I get two "Error" boxes that pop up:

1) sp4iis.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to re-start the program.

2) An error in updating your system has occurred. Select OK to undo the changes...blah blah blah

Q: Do i need SP4? (It's a huge Service Pack - 129mb!!!)

Q: Any ideas on how i can go about installing this safely

Any help appreciated

Try running the service pack in safe mode,
as you know there are less things running in safe mode. :)

Nope - will not install in Safe mode.
I get 2 different error msgs. I did not write the exact words down but the gist was as follows:

1) Something about not being able to get metatags
2) something about no being able to uninstall a couple of .dll files

I've had similar errors on two recent installs, but they had to do with using a service pack that was burned to a cd--I got so fed up with one system, I recommended that the system be wiped and reinstalled--needless to say, the problem reappeared on the new install. What I found out, was that the cdrom drive was going bad. I changed out the cdrom drive and the install completed. I then hooked back up the original cdrom drive. In both cases, the owners cdrom drive appeared to function normally after the updates--go figure.

Gecko - I am pretty sure I am logged on a administrator.
How do I check to confirm this?

Try right clicking the program SP4 and select "run as" and you should be able to pick administrator.

or log off and log on as Administrator. You will need the password in both cases.

I can't remember, in 2000 but 2003 click on start and at the top of the menu it will say Administrator

Hope this helps
