problems with new wireless network

i have a linksys wirless router, which installed fine. i then installed a linksys notebook adapter, however whenever i try to connect to the router it says "external exception"
any fixes?

now my Linksys Wirless-G Notebook Adapter Model = WPC54G will not turn on, so i cannot complete the NetSet Assistant to automatically setup the network. previouslly it automatically turned on upon rebooting the computer...is there a manual way to turn on the notebook adapter?
