Onboard Audio

Postby Mailman752 » Thu Jan 13, 2005 1:47 am

I just built a computer with an ASUS K8N motherboard, which has onboard 8 ch. audio. It also has a built in optical (infrared port) for an Aux. connection.

My problem is that neither of these are putting out a signal. The sound card works fine with my computer speakers, but when I connect the same speakers to the onboard plugs there is no audio at all. Device Manager says everything is working, and there aren't any jumpers listed in the manual for onboard audio or optical.

I have the same issue w/ the optical port. I have a 5.1 system for my tv that I hooked up to the optical port on the computer with a good cable and there is no signal out at all. The port is not lit (red) like most opticals are either, which would suggest it's not on.
The only thing I haven't done, that I just thought of, is removing the sound card and then trying each again.

Is there something I have to activate to enable the onboard audio or optical ports? Any other ideas?

Im going to throw this out here although it may be completely unrelated to your situation.

In some bios setups, you have an option to set your onboard audio/video to a "auto" mode.In the event you insert a soundcard/vidcard, your onboard devices will be disabled.Might not be the case with you but its a thought...

yeah, the BIOS Setting was part of the problem. I went and looked through the manual and the auto detect setting was under Chipset, which I didn't look at before.
I also had to install the nvidia 3 Chipset drivers which I totally forgot about.

One thing I noticed is that after I installed all the drivers on the nvidia cd my HD and DVD/CD Rom was automatically put onto SATA instead of IDE. Is there a reason it did this, and should I switch it back to separate IDE channels?

Also, my DVD/CD drive doesn't read or open burnt audio CD's. It works fine with burnt data, or normal audio cd's, but when I put a burnt audio disc in nothing comes up and if I try to open it in My Computer it freezes. It's a Sony DVD R-W/CD R-W drive, but it didn't come with an audio cable, or any driver disc. Any ideas?
