Hijacked Again and Again - Please Help

Postby quietguy » Sun Jan 23, 2005 11:12 pm

This is my first time posting to a forum of any kind, my apologies if I misunderstand a protocol...

I am running Windows XP SP-2 with IE 6.0.29... with SP-2. I was hijacked about a month ago. HijackThis was awesome at cleaning all but the source code for whatever is hijacking me. When I think I am clean, my log file looks like this,

That file called vopgu.dll/sp.html#28129 is created by the hijacking software. It creates random names. I have mapped it as vopgu, scfll, and vsulo. The reference to "Search Assistant" relates to a program the hijacking software installed. I cannot remove it with Add/Remove Programs, nor can I locate it manually. Two other programs have also shown up that I cannot deleter or locate, Home Search and Search Extender. When first hijacked I also noted a file called mfcpo.exe that I cannot locate, (even iwith show hidden and system files and folders) but my firewall can locate in my system32 folder. Another file called tps3.exe also showed up, but that one I removed.

When I run InterNet Explorer, my firewall blocks the running of the hijack generated files, as long as I refuse the program access to the InterNet I stay clean, but neither can I access the InterNet. It will endlessly request internet access blocking all other activity. To gain access, I let it through, it rehijacks me, and I clean it out later.

Any help you can give me would be most appreciated. I do not use the InterNet often and may take some to implement your feedback, but I will and thank you for it.

Respectfully and gratefully, quietguy

You will need to download and and

Run Ad-aware after you update it and let it remove all it can, then reboot.
Now run DllCompare click the run button and when you can click the Compare button click it.
In a few minutes it will complete in blue Completed
Click the button Make a Log of what was Found
To identify suspected files, look at the dates in the log, only those dated today are the ones you will add to KillBox.

Now, most IMPORTANT that you do not reboot until all bad files are entered into Killbox.

In KillBox Select Option Replace on Reboot
From the Dllcompare log copy & paste each full path into the Killbox’s top most box for each file with todays date.
click the option Use Dummy which will create a numbered dummy file instantly for you.

Click the Red X and click Yes
A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No (untill all files are entered)

Do this for every file you have dated today, in the dllcompare log.
When you get to the last file in the Dllcompare log, also add in one additional file

C:\Windows\System32\Guard.tmp (or whatever your path to System32 is)
After that last file, click Yes when asked to Reboot.

Now use Ad-aware again to clean up the rest of the files.

Then run HijackThis and post a new log

Hello Gecko,

I snuck out early from work to keep this moving. I followed your instructions, with one exception - when I saw all those DLL files that had been dogging me for nearly two months, I KillBot'd them all. I geuss even quiet guys can be overcome with frustration and act harshly. Anyway, here is the new log....

As you will note, the program that has me hijacked has created another DLL file to promote itself. I have more information as well. In the cleaning, the new DLL creation did not result in the same hijacking - no about:blank takeover this time.

This time every favorite and evey typed address leads to nowhere. The address converts to res://jhhte.dll/http_404.htm. No coincidence that the "jhhte.dll" appears in both the HijackThis log and the overtaken Address.

Thanks for your continued help. quietguy

You may also want to download HSRemove, Kill2Me, CWShredder, and CCleaner.

www.hsremove.com
www.filesforfree.com/download/kill2me.php
www.ccleaner.com
www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Run these before DLL Compare and Killbox, and run Adaware to finish it off.

Thanks badpolarbear

I have downloaded it and will likely load it this weekend. Hopefully Dave_Lethal's suggestions with clean my machine. I am not so good as the rest of you at this while the tools get more and more powerful for cleaning as well as inadvertant damage.

Thanks again, quietguy...
