Adware got me and I can't remove the parasite

Postby webwork » Sun Jan 30, 2005 3:16 am

I have a problem simular to the one noted in the Windows XP Forum by JCglobal657.

He had stated; " when I run nortan AV it finds a file called QDow_AS2.dll. Norton cannnot delete it (adware). When I looko for it in the directory norton says it is in I cannot find it."

It's the same problem in regards to the file, it does not show up even with the Show Hidden Files and even when I tryed digging through with the 'DOS' type searching for the file nothing showed. I did read that a forum on PCWorld some guy said he was able to get rid of it using AVG Anti-Virus from Grisoft. I have not tryed this yet. I was able to git rid of the other files found with Norton when this first showed a week ago. They also were not remaoveable by Norton, but I was able to make them "go for ride" sort to say.

I did notice it left IE with a new search file and I know this was not the one I had before, it's 'mysearchstart.com' what I had before was .....microsoft.com/access/allinone.asp and I had not made any change so I think these are reated.

If needed I can post a HighJackThis scan. I have the latest version.

If anyone can offer some advice on this Adware I would be most grateful the computer it is on is used for working my and others websites.

A quick check shows this file to be in your Downloaded Program Files folder..I would run Spybot and Ad Aware first, if those dont remove it then post a hijack log.

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.mysearchstart.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.mysearchstart.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.mysearchstart.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.mysearchstart.com/

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

Do you have a Win Modem? And you should update your IE.

Well ran AVG Free Edition, it said no infections found, the systems clean as far as it can tell. Spybot and Adaware say same as same.

Can't see why Norton says it's there and nothing seems to show from any other program.

Wonder if this is a case of 'chicken little' or the 'when 10 people say your wrong your wrong..Norton"

I really don't like the idea of having two AV programs running, should I dump Norton and run with AVG or the other way around?

I,m going to run another HJTtonight to see if any of the changed entrees are back.

Thanks to you guys for the help.

Yes I'm feeling compeled to go that route as well. I have the box version of Norton and 6 moths left on the subscription.....So it wont bother me to give it the shelf.

The dll Norton say was in the C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder. Norton said it saw it but even with the Hidden file set to show and the other settings set to show hidden file and file paths/extentions it just didn't show up. I had even tryed using Nortons web sites tool for removing this and it came up dry.

The IT guy here at work said I should try using the Rescue disks from Norton to remove it as it could be in use by some other exe or other file.program. But I have not reused Norton and AVG didn't see it.

I had been browsing this forum on other items, so I'll keep in touch. Thanks for the help liljim and PCguy
