Windows XP automatically loads the Drivers for the Mouse and Keyboard so it's a good chance that's NOT the prob.

If you goto START
Right click MyComputer and choose Properties
Click the HARDWARE Tab then Device Manager
Are there any YELLOW Exclamation marks in there?
If so what Device has them?

Have you taken the case of and vacuumed out all the Dust?
Clean the Fans and blow all the dust out.

It means the drivers for those items are not properly installed, Try right clicking on the item and click "Update Drivers"
