Copying 1 HDD to a new blank HDD?

Postby freelobotomy » Tue Feb 22, 2005 4:20 pm

I've searched far & wide but can't find a simple answer. My Dad has a 15Gig Maxtor, running WinXP Pro, exactly how he wants it. He wants to copy everything from the Maxtor to a blank 60 Gig Western Digital. Can this be done without using Max-Blaster software and if so, how? If Max-Blaster is the only or easiest way, please comment. Thanks in advance....

Max-Blaster is about the easiest way to image the drive over.

I use Norton Ghost. Ghost 8.0 fits on a floppy and is a dos interface boot.
Works nice on fat32 or NTFS and linux

You boot from the floppy and run ghost. 15 gig will take about 10 minutes.

Never hook the drives as master and slave. Its too easy to get them mixed up on the transfer. Each drive gets its own IDE cable. Unplug the IDE cable going to the cdrom drive and hook up the new drive to that. Let it hang or support it on a box. Then switch them out after the transfer.

I've never done it yet, but I've seen some of the people I work with get careless and end up with two blank drives --they copied the wrong one. :|
So be careful
