Hard drive not detected? Cannot Boot. Reason Unknown

Postby RCP » Fri Feb 25, 2005 1:57 am

Hello i have:

MSI NEO2 PFISR Mainboard
Pentium 4 Prescott 3200 mhz
MSI GEFORCE FX5600XT 256 MB Graphics card
Seagate Barracuda 300GB SATA Hard drive
Crucial 1024 MB RAM

The MSI Cards have a feature called Dynamic Overclocking Technology (DOT), which when enabled automatically changes the CPU frequency (May also change AGP/PCI, RAM, Graphics card Core and RAM frequencies, i am unsure) with the temperature. When the temperature goes up, i.e. when the CPU is under load, like when playing, etc. the frequency may rise 200 mhz or so.

I decided to test this. I entered BIOS and enabled it, and the computer booted fine.

opened the window of my house (its freezing outside) and started playing NFS U 2. I had CPU-Z open while playing, to monitor the CPU frequency. It had actually gone down to 3192 mhz (this was when playing..) I did not check any other frequencies or any temperatures.

I decided not to use the DOT feature any more, so i restarted the computer and entered BIOS, and loaded the default settings, saved and exited BIOS. restarting the computer...

A text message appears saying something like Ethernet PXE Network Boot... goes away too fast for me to read. And then some thing about MAC Adress and a whole lot of numbers appear. I guess I would just leave the computer alone for a while to let it sort things out on its own, but several minutes later nothing happens. I restart again, and i get a glimpse of "press shift-f10....", i do that. I Guess i entered the Ethernet setup utility or similar. There i can set boot order (19h, 18h and device only) and some other settings. i try the 18 h setting, and then i just get a screen giving me some options.

DEL- enter setup, f11 boot setup f10 network boot setup, flash recovery y/n

i press y.

nothing happens for a while... so i restart the machine with the XP boot CD, and i try pressing the R (for repair) key, but i get a message about "No hard drive found"...

Is my hard drive busted or is something else wrong? please help!

I am almost positive that it is another reason that everything is going wrong. That problem happened to me and I just cannot remember how to fix it. I will try to find what I did and let you know if I can find it.

I just remembered . I believe that it is something to do with your IDE controller, someone may say something else but when I replaced my mobo it ran perfectly fine.
