BIOS updated

Postby th3_d0n » Thu Mar 03, 2005 5:32 pm

Hey all.
I want to update my BIOS. Tthe motherboard i have is an ASUS K8V SE deluxe, so i went to the ASUS website and downloaded a thing called Asus Updates which will automatically update it for you if you select the one you want. But the problem is it keeps telling me that it cannot find the file on the server which I know isn't true because my friend used the same tool to update his. I think i need to to open some ports but i don't know which ones. Any ideas? also, any tips on how to install it manually would be appreciated. I know roughly but i've never done it before.

Many Thanks :)

I read your post and have been hesitating to answer it. Your board is fairly new, and I am not quite sure what you expect a bios flash to do for you.

You need to know what bios version you have on the board presently. You have to be real fast on reading on the boot, it will come up with the bios version--top left hand corner. (you might already have the latest version)

Normaly to flash a bios, you need a floppy that will DOS boot. Then you copy the executable file, like flash.exe to the boot disk. then you copy the bios update file to the same disk and then run on boot. then you execute the exe file like "flash aaa123.xxx."

I strongly suggest, that you forget flashing your bios. If you pick the wrong file, you will need to buy a new motherboard.

I don't normally suggest this route as a solution, but your post suggests to me that you are way in over your head. You're asking for trouble. Flashing a bios is a very unforgiving thing!

icecube... as our friend said he has an application which is supposed to update his BIOS. Is it more safe to use these type of applications, rather than do it manually?

Bios Updates

Postby th3_d0n » Sat Mar 05, 2005 1:55 pm

Hey guys. Thanks for the replies. My BIOS version is 1004.006 and there is a newer version on the website, 1005 Yeah i have an application made by ASUS that will update it for you, but i think it's having trouble connecting to the server becuase od my router. And i don't know which ports to configure. I'd rather do it this way becuase it is less risky, and i know that doing it the other way can be very risky which is why i'd rather use the application. The reason i want to update it is because I'm getting a lot of read errors (Esp with HL2 and HL2 bases programmes) and on the support page it says to update your BIOS to the latest version. So, does anyone know a way to find out the ports i need to open?

Many Thanks again

Port 80 is for ftp of files--that should be the one you need.

I've never tried to flash a bios from the windows operating system. I suspect that the program writes a bat file that runs on boot to modify the bios.

There are several issues involved. In the bios itself there is a lock and unlock for writing to the bios. This has to be unlocked. It is possible to flash the bios after Windows is running, that part of the O/S is only used on boot. I suspect that any good virus software would shut down any attemt to write to the bios. The Chernoble virus realy ruined some motherboards.

I don't really understand your technique of conneting with their server to do the update.
the bios file is only 1k

Can you give me the web site you are using? I would like to bone up on this new technique.

I just visited the ASUS web site for your board here is the link

they have a bios update and a warning in red.

**Please flash BIOS using K8V1005.exe, and do not flash from 1001, 1002 or 1003 to version 1004 through EZFlash/AFUDOS/LiveUpdate** :|

Remember English is a second language here, is 1004 excluded from the warning, or was it added to the original warning by another person?

Usually the K8V1005.exe, is a file that you run from windows with a floppy in the drive. It should load a boot image to the floppy. Then you boot to that and run the program. There will be a read me file on the floppy with how to instructions.

If you are still set on running it, you need to go into the bios and copy down your settings because they will be reset to factory defaults on reboot. You need to enable Update Bios and set first boot device as the floppy.

Good luck
