i have cable internet at home. i set up a wireless routher(all cables connected and all setup right) and when i try to get online with my laptop it doesnt work. i tried everything, i set up all the same ip addresses and dns server #'s and everything. it finally connected to "MSHOME", but the latptop still wont go online. the desktop does go online, but it is connected thru the network cable from the wireless router
Need a little more info. What O/S are you running? XP on both or XP and Win2000? the IP for your router should be 198.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
DHCP should be the way to go for setting the laptop and desktop. but if you are setting fixed IP's, what are they set at, for each machine?
i ran the setup on both computers. on the laptop(with the wireless card) if i change the tcp/ip setting to obtain an ip address automatically, it says limited or no cennectivity to network, but if i manually put in values, it connects, but for the status, it shows 0 packets being recieved, but the sent packets keep increasing
The reason i asked what kind of router you have is because the default IP of the router itself does sometimes vary, your router manual should tell you the default IP for your particular router. Something else you need to know is if your router is running as a DHCP server or an access point, normally its DHCP by default which would mean your machines should be set to automaticly pull an IP from the router. You can also try to give the machines an IP, then set the routers ip as the default gateway address, that should give you internet access (in a perfect world). Just thoughts you can look into
i ran the cd that came with the router on each computer... the desktop still works fine, but the laptop i changed all the setting cept the laptop's IP address and it connectsto my network, but still cant go online.
i had the network setup choose the addresses and everything and i just used them for the laptop.
on the laptop i disabled the firewall. but on the desktop, there was no option saying firewall was on or off. i have sp1 on the desktop because sp2 fails when it upgrades. any other suggestions...
also when i plus the laptop in thru a wired lan cord, it connects the same but still doesnt go online. if that helps any
when i directly connect the laptop from the cable modem with an ethernet cord, it "aquires network address" for a long time, then a message pops up saying limited or no internet access.
i decided to go out and buy a router and pc card of the same brand. i bought a dlink airplus extreme g router and pc card. i have the cable modem connected to the wireless router, and the desktop connected to the router thru an ethernet cable. the desktop can go online with no problem. i installed the wireless pc card to my laptop. when i have the setting aquired automatically, the connection is "limited or no connectivity" and when i manuall enter the setting for the card, it says it has an excellent connection but will not connect to the internet. ive tried almost everything i could think of. also i tried connecting the laptop hardwired to the router to go online, and it still said limited or no connectivity. can someone please help me get my laptop online.
