Resetting the router is just a shot in the dark-- some of the settings could be wrong.

I've run accross situations similar to yours and they have all been firewall issues.

XP service pack 2 default installs the XP firewall as on. Zone alarm can mess it up also with its firewall. AOLcan mess it up depending on what phase the moon is in

Another thing that can mess up networks is a virus.

Try an f8 boot into safe mode and pick safe mode with network support and ping your router. If it pings ok, its a firewall issue.

ipconfig /? from command prompt will show you the reset options for your nic.
Usually /release and /renew

Don't be too quick if it pings ok--it can take a while for the computer to show up on your network--like 5 minutes

Ice...

This is a brand new installation of XP from pre SP1 days... I've not been able to download any of the Service pack or driver updates for anything... So don't think it's a Firewall issue. Unless there is a firewall setting somewhere on the earlier XP versions I'm not aware of (not out of the realm of possiblities..)

I would think that this would exclude viruses as well.

It is an older computer setup that has been mothballed for quite a while. I'm starting to think that this old computer might be the issue. I saw a cheap comp for 350 USD at best buy (after 300 rebate) am thinking that I might just go buy it, and do some distructive testing on my current comp.

Will update this soon with results....

Thanks again

Junior, try this. Click on Start, Run and type in cmd then hit enter.

In the DOS box type in "ipconfig /all" with the space and with out the quotes then hit enter.

Take a screen shot of what you get and post it.

Hi Junior_co,
I’ve read through all of this post and from the picture you posted
Dhcp is disabled and IP Routing is also disabled.
I think you should reset you tcp/ip back to auto and see if you get an IP

Start > Control panel > Network Connection >
Right click on your local area connection > select Properties >
Select TCP/IP and click the Properties button >
General tap > Check “Obtain an IP address automatically” >
Check “Obtain a DNS server address automatically >
Alternate Configuration tab > Check “Automatic Private IP address
Click OK > click OK > and restart your system

Run the ipconfig /all command again and see if you are assigned an IP
If you are assigned an IP what is it?

If you are not assigned an IP then I would suggest that you try uninstalling your network card.

Start > Control panel > System > Hardware tab > Device manager >
Select your network adapter > right click select uninstall > click yes to restart now.
When windows finds your new hardware make sure you use the newest drivers
for your Linksys LNE100XTX (v5) fast ethernet adapter, reboot.

Run the ipconfig /all command again and see if you are assigned an IP
If you are assigned an IP what is it?

Well, Unfortunately this problem has not rectified it's self

Here is a list of what I've done since the last post:

swapped cables with primary comp. No change (NC)
killed power to all components. rebooted #2 comp first. NC
Reset router NC
Tried Gecko's suggestion NC... still have a "no" for dhcp enabled and ip routing enabled
Uninstalled all drivers for the linksys card and reinstalled NC
looked for more up to date drivers Found none

I'm thinking that it might be an issue of not having any of the windows updates... Is this a possibility? Is there a way to update Windows XP with out an internet connection??

Also, I'm slowly running our of time to to "Activate" my copy on XP...

I'm real close to turning this comp #2 in to a gravity experiment....

Thanks again for the help

Dont know if this has been addressed before, but did you turn off windows firewall on the pc that isn't functioning?

also, why is dhcp disabled? does your router act as a dhcp?

if you can poing 127.0.0.1 then your NIC is ok. So it's a setting between your router and your PC.

I'm not sure about the firewall.... This is an original install of XP from pre SP1. I didn't think they had a fire wall that early, but I will double check.

As to why the DHCP is disabled, I have no Idea what dhcp is much less why it is disabled.
 sorry for my ignorance...

Also, I tried the ping 127.0.0.1. Came back with 0% loss.....

DHCP (excuse me cause im a bit....happy) is Dynamic Host Control Protocol. Basically it assigns a PC an IP. Can you do a Start-->Run-->CMD-->Enter then ipconfig /all and give me a screen shot of the PC that works?

Just a little tip here:

When in the command prompt window and you want to copy the text contents
Right click the command window select “Mark” now drag your mouse pointer over the text that you want to copy.
Once you have the text highlighted press “Enter” that copies the text to the clipboard.
now you can paste the text into a document like notepad, word pad or a post.
