hard drive

Postby leeegglestone » Wed Nov 19, 2003 10:41 pm

Ive just tried to install a new bigger hard drive to my pc
I have xp2400, 512mb, abit kt7a

My existing hard drive is 30 gb and tried adding a new 80gb to go with it

Firstly i attached the new hd to the existing one, and made it the slave
My second slot was attached to the dvd-rw

When ive booted up and checked the bios ive managed to get it detected but when i an in windows, no extra drive is shown in my computer.
Ive tried different configurations, making the new hd master with the dvd-rw slave etc.

Its brand new drive and not done anything to it.
Why cant i see it even when its shown in the bios

Im running windows xp

Hope u can help, its driving me crazy

before the drive gets a drive letter (such as c: d:, etc) you need to put a partition on it. Right click My Computer, go to MANAGE, click on DISK MANAGEMENT... you should be able to figure it out from there.

Good luck

OK, My computer is the Screen where all drive partitions show up as drive letters along with mapped network drives and CD-roms.

Does the drive now show up in the DEVICE MANAGER? That would totally point me in another direction. Again I'll state what I think you need to do.

right click on the My Computer ICON on the desktop, choose MANAGE, Choose the Disk Management icon under Storage. Hit yes to any questions about adding signatures to drives. On the right side of the screen there should be a listing of all the physical drives in your system. One of them will be a dull grey with nothing in it... you'll need to add a partition to that drive b4 you can use it.

hard drive

Postby leeegglestone » Thu Nov 20, 2003 9:48 pm

ok i went thru my computer, manage and got the disk management

It had my new hard drive as not configured and so not shown nxt to the c:

how can i partition it direct thru win xp,i coudlnt find it, itried fdisk typed in the run section but nothing.

I swapped new hd to primary master, used win 98 bootdisk to do fdisk etc, when i got to partition it only shows me the old hd that was already partitioned.

i used dir commands for c, d, e, f drives but only found the old hd,and cdrom etc.
I checked bios and it shows that the new hd is detected.

After swapping connections with old hd as primary master and new hd slave, and with dvd writer.

The floppy wont work now to boot from, it doesnt light up at bootup
and it activates when u get the verifiying data screen before it moves on to boot the OS.

I swapped to a different floppy and that did the same.
I reset the bios settings to default and nothing.

Whats going on, why cant anything just be done simple.

Please help
