wireless card install problems

Postby bmiller » Fri Apr 23, 2004 10:52 pm

hi just found this forum....thank you for having it...

here's my problem - i'm trying to get a small wireless network set-up for my home. I've got a desktop running windows XP and a laptop provided by my employer that I use for my job. I purchased Linksys Wireless g stuff. The router seems to have installed perfectly on the desktop. For the laptop, first I had to download the zipped file of drivers for the wireless card as my PC does not have a CD drive. I unzipped these files, installed software, seemed okay. Instructions say to turn off laptop, insert card and power back up. Upon powering back up I get an error message telling me OdHost CoCreateInstall Failure Satus is 080040154. I hit the "okay" then get error message box title Runtime Error that includes the statement Abnormal program termination. hit okay again and get similar error message, but with a differnt file.
Linksys wants me to try the card in another computer, but I do not have access to another computer for several days. CompUSA wanted $40 to plug it into another computer... my corporate IT guys say "well we really don't support home installs..."
so here I am....any ideas?
thanks...

Turn off the Computer. Take out the Card. Power-up. Now insert the Card. Windows will attempt to install it. If it asks for the install CD point it to the folder you downloaded.
Let us know.

Hi Brad,
thanks for the input..by the way you're in charlotte? me too - southeast charlotte...
anyway here's the latest - i did as you instructed. when the computer was powering up, I got the same message about COCreateInstance failed, then the same second message. I then put in the wireless card...it lit up and then i started getting a message box popping up titled Wireless WPC54..etc with the message saying "External Exception E0607363" identical boxes kept popping up...i hit okay on one, it goes away...others pop up...probably would eventually fill the screen if i let it...i shut it down.

if this helps i also tried powering back up with my ethernet card installed instead. This is the way i have been using the laptop for months with no problems. The same CoCreateInstance message popped up as well as the second message. I have never had these messages prior to installing the linksys software. think it is the linksys software install??
again thanks for any input

I have exactly the same problem on a Dell laptop running Windows ME. Have you found a solution yet?

Thanks

john54.... You should always start a new Topic for your problem. We also need details...O.S. and exactly what is happening and what you have done.

Wireless-G External Exception error.

Postby ckamer » Wed May 26, 2004 2:38 pm

I had the same exact problem, to resolve I did the following:
(my OS W2K)

- Downloaded the current driver utility set from linksys.com (just this morning, 5/26/2004) http://www.linksys.com/download/driver.asp?dlid=92

- Removed the Wireless-G adapter from Device Manger

- Un-installed the existing driver utility [Start][Programs][Wireless-G Notebook Adapter][Unistall]

- Physically Removed wireless-G PCMCIA adapter

- Rebooted

- Re-installed from downloaded zip file

- shutdown

- inserted wireless-g adatper

- powered up

- W2K found and installed the adapter

After all this the WLAN monitor worked properly
