Everything's on but no BIOS screen

Postby eXp0se » Mon Jul 18, 2005 11:46 pm

Alright guys, I've got a new problem on my hands.

I got my PC to start up. I went to the BIOS screen and overclocked the CPU a bit. Well....a bit is not quite right. I have a 3.0 P4 and I OC it to about 3.7, but it was only running at 40ºC. So, I continued on with my XP install and everything was working fine. I got XP installed and I was updating the firmware for my BIOS from the Gigabyte CD I got with the mobo. All of the sudden, Windows logged out and shutdown. When I tried to restart the computer, my screen said something about part of the BIOS being on the HD. Nevertheless, I shutdown and tried to restart. Everything turns on and the HDD LED shows activity, but my monitor won't turn come on with the BIOS info. It just runs and keeps running, but the monitor never kicks on. I've tried three different HD and I get the same result each time.

I thought it was the CPU, but I thought the computer wouldn't even turn on if the CPU was blown out. Please help!!!!

try clearing the bios by taking out the small battery on the motherboard, wait like 2-3 minutes and put it back in then try to turn on your pc and see what happens

I've tried that several times.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed.
But, I'll try it again...

There should be a jumper on your motherboard to reset the BIOS with.
Look through your manual for the location of this jumper and how to use it.

I tried putting the jumper on the reset pins and turning on the power, but it didn't do anything.

I also took out the battery and unplugged the mobo power and left it like that all night. Still nothing.....

My mobo came with a "beeper", the little device that creates those beeps at startup. Do you have any idea where I would put it? It's a 4-pin connector with two wires running out of it, a red wire and a ground(black) wire.

I'm not sure of what type of MB you have but the little beeper plugs into the 4 prong speaker connector--either way it should work.

Pull out all of the cards and then reset the bios. Leave the battery in and make sure you find the bios reset pins ususally it is 3 pins with two connected. connect the other two for a second and that resets the bios. On some motherboards, it is two sodier points that you short out with a screwdriver (unlplug the system first)

Disconnect the hard drives floppy and cdrom drive. Put in a video card and see if it boots. If you have the little beeper hooked up it should give you a double beep hopefully. If not, the beep code should give us an indication of what is wrong with the system.

Need to know the board type and bios maker ie AMD or Phoenix.

Just hazzarding a guess, I could be that your video card died while you were overclocking and the two actions are not related

Here are my specs:
Gigabyte 9i5PL-G Rev. 1 Mobo
Pentium 4 3.0 530J Prescott LGA775
1GB Kingston Hyper-X Dual Channel RAM 2700
Gigabyte X700 pro 256 PCI-Xpress x16 graphics card
350W PSU
160GB Western Digital 7200RPM HD

I've tried plugging the beeper into the speaker pins on the front panel jumpers. It doesn't make any noise no matter which way I plug it in.

What do you guys think about this idea...

Maybe the mobo is blown out. Not the entire thing, just the part that holds the BIOS.

Any thoughts?

It doesn't look good, You could try another power supply, if that doesn't work, then you'll have to test the memory and cpu on another working system

The PSU is fine because everything is turning on and lighting up. The fan on the graphics card is coming on and the HD activity lights are showing up.

I don't have another working system that supports this CPU. I could put my other box back together and test the RAM, but I doubt that the RAM is the problem. When I took it out, everything stayed the same. I unplugged the HD and CDrom...same result. I have a hunch that it's the mobo.

w00t!

I have a working beeper now!!!!

I took my PCI cards, IDE drives, and RAM out and restarted my computer. I got continuous long beeps. This means that there's a DRAM error(or so my mobo manual said). When I plug my RAM in, I get no beeps at all.

I think the mobo might be messed up. Because of the overclocking, have I completely killed my chances at getting an RMA?

Just because the Power supply is functioning, don't assume that its OK. Voltages supplied by the PS may not meet the expected or demanded amounts. A bad power supply can be the hardest thing to diagnose.

I'd try a 400 watt Power supply on it first. If it isn't that, all thats left to test is the MB CPU and Memory.

Remember never take out the memory with the power supply plugged into the wall, even with the computer turned off. It can fry your memory. Your board is always hot even when off. Remove the powercord from the system first.

A lot of stores offer a 90 day exchange on motherboards usually without asking any questions.
