Invalid Product key

Postby Gecko » Sat Jul 23, 2005 11:06 pm

I have come across a windows XP system that would not update to sp1, “The product key used to install Windows is invalid”
I told this person that the would have to purchase a Windows XP pro CD so I could change the key to the new one and then update the OS.
I have followed the instructions per on changing your product key and it does not work.
When I try to run the msoobe.exe from the run command nothing happens, no window about “Windows is already activated” nothing.
I have even tried a few of the key changer programs out there and nothing will work.
This person purchased the system used and I have no idea what was done to prevent msoobe.exe from running.

So the question I have is this, if I do an in-place upgrade to enter the new product key and then copy the old Repair directory contents
back when the in-place upgrade is done will all the installed programs still work?

I've upgraded a few XP home editions (laptops) to XP Pro. The way thats done might work in your case also.

Boot up the bad product key system. remove any virus scan software and reboot. From the Windows desk top Insert the new XP cd and click on install when it boots up.

You'll get a drop down window, I can't remember what the the other options are, but I use upgrade. One of the other options might be more to your liking. It will prompt you for the new product key. All of your software and drivers remain intact

There is one issue to be aware of,make sure you're cd that you are upgrading with has service pack two on it, otherwise you need to remove service pack 1 from the system being done over. In your case, that shouldn't be a problem.

I do have a key reset program/package that doesn't need the msoobe.exe. PM me if you need a copy.

Thank you icecube for your advice,
I have a windows XP pro CD with sp2 slipstreamed that I made that I plan on using.
I’ll just use his new key, I’ve used this CD many times and it works great.

I have since read from Microsoft that if you try an in-place upgrade you need to
have at least sp1 on the CD or you can loose the user settings and start menu items.
They also suggested that you do the in-place upgrade from within windows as you said.
If you boot from the CD to do the in-place upgrade you can loose the user settings.

P.S. pm sent, thank you again

I have a Key changer. It works well. I ran into a similar situation where I had a person who needed to change the key. I changed it with this product and it worked like a charm. If you want it, let me know. :)
