Moving files

Postby venney » Thu Aug 04, 2005 10:04 pm

Hello everyone, i got a second hard drive put in. its 150 (just under) gig, not as much as i wanted but it'l do. I want to move files over to it, to free up the main 1. Is there a way i can move the 'documents' folder, not just mine but all the users, and make it defalt to the second hard drive. So it wont creat an empty 'documents' folder on the main 1.

If its not do able, can i make like a 'my music' folder on the new hard drive. If not what files do you recommend moving over? I was thinking of uninstalling the games and installing them to the new hard drive. The second hard drive is just completly empty, nothing on it at the moment.

Thanks guys,

Venney

For an individual user just right click on MyDocuments select Properties click the Move button.

As for programs already installed, you would have to reinstall them to the new drive.

I would reinstall the software you need on the new hard drive and then delete it off the old one. If you start dragging windows programs to a new HD you're just asking for long sleepless nights trying to get your system running correct again. Pictures, movies or anything like that does not matter. Just remember the basic rule of software, BACKUP!
BACKUP! BACKUP!

moving files

You might want to look at Ultra Win Cleaner by business logic corp if you have a lot of apps to move. I picked it up a couple of years ago & have been using it on xp when needed. It does a lot of things besides move files too. I once moved about two dozen files from one drive to another without doing the routine of uninstall/install. I only had two or three that had problems and had to be done the hard way. Its also fast.
If it doesn't work for you the only thing lost is a few minutes of testing. My copy is old so I don;t know if the website still has a trial that does the move.
