USB expansion problem

Postby ColaBoy » Sat Aug 13, 2005 11:46 pm

Ive installed a USB expansion card in one of my PCI ports but have noticed that whenever anything is attached to it, ie joystick or mouse etc, my pc wont SHUTDOWN and instead RESTARTS. To SHUTDOWN I have to remove any USB devices attached to the card and then SHUTDOWN.
Anyone know why this is??

It sounds like your have a shut down error and your system is set to reboot on errors.
You can view the error through Control panel > Administration tools > Event viewer > System

To change the reboot on errors setting:
Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery section
Settings button > System Failure section > check the box 'Write an event to the system log'
and uncheck 'Automatically Restart'
Now when it happens you will get a BSOD with the error listed on the blue screen.

These errors are often hard to trace down but this is where you start,
once you have the error code, post it back here and we’ll go from there.

Thanks for the reply. I checked and found I'd already done all that but I'm not getting any Blue Screens or error messages.

XP Home Edition. I'm thinking that maybe theres some kinda incompatablity issue with the OS as well. When I bought it it never specified an OS in the instructions.

Take Bent's advice, you need a powered hub. The motherbord isn't going to like supplying more than 1/2 milli amp. All your going to do is blow your power supply. A usb printer, scanner and usb hard drive together pull more juice that your motherboard can deliver

USB will allow you to daisy chain 127 devices onto one port. What isn't mentioned, is that when you stick the unit into another port you've installed it again. So instead of one camera, one printer, one keyboard and one mouse, you can mulitply them by the number of different USB ports that you've plugged them into. Your system will choke

Go into device manager and remove everything in the USB section. reboot and let it find each item again. You may need your drivers disk again.

Hope this is of some help
