Pc wont power up since installing DVD burner??

Postby PhatBeat » Sat Aug 20, 2005 1:48 pm

Yes I know that sounds weird, its stumpt me,

Basically it was all working fine, had a DVD rom and just bought a writer (LG GSA 4163) so took the rom out and replaced with same IDE cable and power connection.( power off obviously) when powered back on the power light and case fans all work for if 1 second and then nothing?
I can only get it to do this again by turning the power off from the mains sockets and then turning it al back on to get the same.

The PC has all new components I only built it a month or soo ago and its been really stable.

P4 630
gigabyte mobo
2gig RAM
200GB Barracuda SATA
their the main elements anyhow;

When the power does come on for its second I get no HDD spinning up, there’s nothing on the screens, there are no beeps nor does the CPU fan spin (although this could be norm as its a smart fan which only turns on when needed; which is most of the time  )

Things ive tried:

Un-pluging all the physical connections (SATA/IDE/Power) and reconnecting.

Removing items one by one to see if it would point to one thing like the burner, the RAM, the HDD

Other then this I don’t know what else to do other then take the PC to a repair shop and get ready to open my wallet.

what do you guys think? Any help would be much appreciated!

regards

Sam

It could be the power supply.

Pull the power supply out of the system.

grasp the wide power clip that fits into the motherboard and notice that on the plastic side where the release part is, there is a green wire. With the power off, take a paper clip, straighten it out and bend it into a 'u' and connect the green wire and the adjacent black wire together. Take one of the power molex connectors and plug it into the hard drive (this will provide a load for the power supply) plug in power and turn on the power supply. If it doesn't stay on, the power supply is bad.

If you don't feel comfortable doing that, you can purchase a new power supply and plug it in, if thats not the problem, return it for a refund.

I've had power supplys go out twice on these new "Made in China" cases. The power ratings on the power supplies are suspect.---they say 300 to 400 watts but they look like the old 230 watt power supplies :| . I have yet to figure out how the acutal wattage is calculated.

Unplug everything except the motherboard and see if you then get video. Also unplug the IDE cables from the motherboard and any cards that you have in the system. Just leave the video and the motherboard plugged in. If you get video then plug each thing in one at a time. If you don't get video then it's either the power supply or the motherboard. Hopefully the PS. Keep in mind that you can short computer parts out just by touching them. Always keep yourself grounded.

Good luck
