New build machine...can't diagnose problem

Postby sonu » Wed Oct 05, 2005 12:30 pm

Hi,
Some help required please.
I am building a new machine.
It has an Asus motherboard P4P800S-X Socket-478, memory is 512MB DDR 400MHz PC3200 CL=3 and P4 3.0ghz chip, plus all the usual components.

The problem I have is that when all assembled and when booted, everything lights up, but the hard drive and dvd drive are not working, thus no output onto the screen.
However when disconnecting the IDE cables, they both start working. When reconnecting the IDE cables they both go off. (as I can't eject dvd drive and no sound coming from hard drive)

Having though it was a faulty motherboard, I have replaced that, but still have the same problem. I have changed the IDE cables and tested another PSU but still the same.

Anybody have any advice or solution to what could be wrong and why? Any help will be appreciated.

Thankyou

It is an IDE hard drive. Seagate ST3120026A 120GB 7200rpm 8mb Cache Barracuda 7200.7 Plus

The product code if you want to check it out on www.ebuyer.co.uk is 52159

Are the jumpers set right for the HDD and the DVD drive?

I would suggest that you jumper them both to master and then put them on separate IDE cables.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Yeah the jumpers are both on masters and are both connected to seperate ide cables.
The hard disk is connected to the primary ide connector and the dvd drive to the secondary one.

Having tried swapping the ide cables round so primary > secondary and vice versa it did not help. I have also changed the IDE cables and tried 3 varieties and it is still the same. Also tried different combinations of master and slave with the dvd drive but that has not worked either.

When switching on the machine as well as no displayon screen I don't get any beeps from the machine either.
There is no operating system currently installed as it is a brand new drive.
