Vundo Trojan

Postby Torquay-Pete » Fri Nov 11, 2005 6:56 am

Hi to all, I have had a toublesome few weeks with my system running strangely and after
trying all kinds of different scans (virus and trojan) i have discovered that I have the Trojan
Vundo on my PC!! After extensive research to remove this I found a removal tool from
Symantec. I ran this and Sue enough it was promptly found and apparently removed. However (there is always a however!!) after re-booting the Trojan was there again!
This got me to thinking that it is regenerating itself BEFORE windows boots up??. I thought that I would re-install Windows as an upgrade (Saving my settings) but had the message that I was trying to install an older version than the one that was on there??
I then remembered that I had recently installed Service pack 2 so attempted to remove this first!!, Now things get really serious!!
I Can`t remove service pack 2    .
So it looks like I will have to do a complete format and New instalation of windows (a road I`d hoped to avoid if possible) Has anyone PLEASE got any ideas on how to get this Poxy trojan out of my System?? Thanks in advance Pete :|

Hello again Gecko, sorry for the delay in getting back to you
I have been down the Killbox route and received the following error message while trying to
get through the operation "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed
by external process!!" So to cut a long story short ,this Vundo just aint gonna go away, and
just re-installs itself every time I re-boot   It looks like I am gonna have to do a re-
format or else put up with it eh?? Unless you can think of anything else of course. I REALLY dont want to re-format at all!!!
Thanks as always Pete Devon UK

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Download Process Explorer (procexp.exe) from Sysinternals (link is at the bottom of page)

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked.

Start KillBox but do not try to delete anything yet.

Run Process Explorer and suspend the Explorer.exe, Winlogon.exe, and rundll32.exe processes (right-click on these process names and choose suspend)

Now use KillBox put a check next to 'Delete on reboot' and type or paste the below into the textbox:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlljg.dll
click on the red X, click yes to delete file on reboot but click no to reboot now.

Do the same for:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gjllm.dll
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\your-user-name-goes-here\LOCAL
SETTINGS\TEMP\VMTEMP.TMP

Do not exit Killbox and physically power the machine off and back on.
A hard reset is required as to stop the 'Pending File Operations Registry Data has been removed by external process' from coming up

After the reboot post a new HiJackThis log
