Major popup problem

Postby Dave_Lethal » Sun Nov 27, 2005 3:04 am

My brother (quickshot55) posted a log on here not too long ago because his AIM was eating up all of his CPU usage. Well that got fixed thanks to Gecko's HJT expertise. He tried updating Windows and now he's getting popups every 2 minutes. I'm running in Safe Mode with Networking, I have done an updated Adaware and Spybot scan, and installed Tea Timer on his computer. I cleaned it out as best as I could, but the popups are still coming. Also, since updating Windows, every time you open IE it says that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. You can't even get to his home page before it closes. So I installed Mozilla so that he can get on the web, and even now while I'm trying to type this I get redirected to other websites and have to continually hit back to get back to this page. Unfortunately he refuses to use System Restore because it takes up too much memory...so I can't just restore his PC to before he installed the updates. I would like to get SP2 on this computer but I can't because IE keeps crashing. When I send a crash report, the Microsoft Crash Analasys says that the problem is unknown at this time.

Here's a new HJT log, hopefully we can figure something out here so that I can update his computer and prevent this from happening in the future.

Nevermind, I have found a solution. The problem was DLL files that were renaming themselves with random names in the System32 folder every time I restarted the computer. I used killbox to delete the files and deleted all the EXE files that were created on the same date...and I also reinstalled IE. Everything is back in working order and I am in the process of getting all of his Windows Updates (There are 32 high priority updates that he has been ignoring, not including SP2 which I will also be getting)

:)

*sigh* I'm still having a problem.

All 32 Windows Updates failed. I got a message that said "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed". The updates downloaded, but they would not install.

I restarted to see if that would help, and now IE is crashing right when I start it up again. I tried reinstalling it again but that did not fix the problem.

On the plus side, all the popups and everything are gone. I can get on with Mozilla, but IE and Windows Updates are not working. Any ideas?

Here is a fresh log. When I try to delete the 01 host talsearch.com or whatever, it says HijackThis could not write the selected changes to your hosts file. The probable cause is that some program is denying access to it, or that your user account doesn't have the rights to write it. I am on the Admin account.

I downloaded AVG free as I realized he did not have any virus protection either. AVG detected and healed the file you mentioned, as well as 2 others so far. I will keep you guys up to date once the scan finishes and I test everything out.

Ok, AVG detected and cleaned 23 viruses. IE is up and running again...for now at least.

However, I tried installing the Windows Updates again, and all 22 of them failed. It says...
"oblem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem."

Troubleshooter is useless.

Here is a fresh HJT log...

The 01 host file that I can't get rid of is still there. Does that mean the trojan is still present?

Update: I removed the 01 Host entry in HJT via Safe Mode. So the log looks the same, without the 01 Host entry.

I dont see anything else in the log that indicates a problem.

You might be able to install SP2 from a cd, here's a link to the full dowload.

I would try to download it on his machine and run it or download it on yours (or another) and burn it to disk then run on his. I dont know whats stopping windows update, this is the best i could come up with at the moment. Gecko or someone else may have other suggestions.

I see two anti-virus programs running now:
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe
C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Antivirus Platinum\pavsrv51.exe
I would suggest that you uninstall one of them first before doing anything else.

Service pack 2 can be a pain sometimes, do as liljim suggested download the IT version.
Before you try and install sp2 disconnect from the internet and shut off the anti-virus you kept.
Also shut off everything that is not necessary for windows to run, the task manager should look like this:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE

Half of the tasks that I try to shut down, I'm getting an error message:

The operation could not be completed. Access is denied.

Something is really wrong here...

Before I attempt to download that enormous file and install SP2, I am emailing Microsoft Tech Support about the problem. They wrote me back once, and had me do a number of things, all of which did not work. I sent a WindowsUpdate.log file, a .NFO System Info file, and a screenshot of the error screen that I keep getting to his personal email address because he requested them if the solution he sent me did not work. I will see what happens and if I come to a solution I will post it.

Ok, I downloaded SP2 from the link Liljim provided, and I'm getting this error message when I open it:

"C:\Documents And Settings\Wesker\Desktop\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU-1.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
