Postby RWD3 » Sat Dec 03, 2005 9:27 am

Ok i am trying to help my freind out, this is his laptop and he has been complaining of it running slow. Timed windows load is 15 minutes, when opening an application music skips runned in itunes. Any program even Microsoft Word takes around 5 minutes to load. The computer randomly goes into stand-by. Progams randomly crash and wont be able to start up unless restarted. Also screen saver lags..lol.....Anyway if you can help thank you very much

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:
MyWebSearch
MyWaySearch

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Several people may disagree with my comment but getting rid of norton will help speed up that machine.

Take a look...

Running processes from norton:
1-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe
2-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
3-C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exe
4-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
5-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
6-C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
7-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
8-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe
9-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe
10-C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe

10 running processes from 1 Antivirus Program that doesnt work very well anyway.

AVG
PC-Cillin
and even Panda are good alternatives that dont require so many resources.

If you change antivirus programs, install and update the new one before removing the old one.

Hello there. I use panda anti virus. And to be honest it can be a REAL pain.
There support never gets back to me, the firewall in there always messes up saying 'internal error' and i have to spend an hour sorting it out. Panda also effects my css playing (counter strike source), sometimes it just causes lag and other I cant even get the master server list, even though its allowed through the firewall.

But to be totally honest, it doesn’t keep out viruses, since i properly got it working I don’t think I’ve even had close to a virus.

I don't really like Norton because it does take up allot of resources, but my mate The Don on these forums has it and I was talking to him about it the other day in college, and i asked him does it effect his css, and he said no because u can change the settings so it only runs at certain times, so for example, he can set it to do a scan at 9.30 in the morning, so as long as he’s not playing at 9.30 its cool.

Hope I’ve helped.

Venney

Im using AVG myself and i was using PC Cillin prior to that. Neither of those effect other applications, cause lag or let virus's slip by. I am extremely satisfied with both of these. I tried panda for about a month but i didnt run into the problems venney has. I wasnt crazy about the interface but it seemed to work ok. Thanks venney for the insite on it though. I wont be suggesting it anymore.

Well I don’t mean to like put panda down, but there are problems with it. But when I got my pc fixed at a shop. The technicians where all recommending panda, and it was the only one they sold, they said it was allot better than the others which is why they wont sell the others.

I mite try using what you are suggesting liljim, so thank you :)
