my horrible laptop

Postby apoclypsenc17 » Fri Dec 16, 2005 12:38 pm

im new to this, and one of my friends did a post for me a couple of weeks ago (RWD3) and my computer still by defination, blows. anytime im playing itunes and open any files, it skips. which is a problem ive been having. i changed my anti-virus from norton to avast and even though its not running as many process', its still running slow. now i have this problem where, if im on the internet, i cant click buttons. like if im in my email, i cant click the delete button. which sucks. when i start up my laptop, it still takes a good 5 minutes to load. which is better, i once timed it at 22. that and everything i open takes a while to load. i just want it to run faster. and not crash like it has a tendency to do. i did a log file and here it is:

Your log looks clean :)

I count 37 items that are always running, eliminating some of these from startup will help.
Go to Start > Run > type:
msconfig and press enter
Go to the Startup tab and uncheck anything that you do not need on startup like:
Microsoft Office msoffice.exe
iTunesHelper.exe
RealPlay.exe
AIM\aim.exe
PowerDVD DVDLauncher.exe
QuickBooks QBUpdate qbupdate.exe

In my opinion most laptops don’t have enough memory installed from the factory
A memory upgrade is usually the best bang for your buck type of thing.
For around $100.00 you can add 256 mb ram and you will be amazed how much better it will run.

As for what Linux to use I would suggest Mandrake Linux as a good first linux install.
It’s easy to install, has the most drivers and you do not have to do line commands to get up and running.

i just did what you said and it did load a little faster, but my itunes still skips when i open another program. and i cant click my internet buttons either. which is irating since i cant delete any emails. i cant even hit submit on these posts, im using my mothers desktop. im going to run a virus scan and spyware scan to see if it helps.

also, will an external harddrive help speed it up? im planning on getting one and moving all my files over to that. and with the itunes, is it possible i have a corrupted music file? i got everything off limewire. and im talking 4.69GB of music. i dunno, im a complete nubling at this. thanks for all your help by the way.

anymore advice is welcome.
happy holidays

No nick the external memory would not speed things up, it was just an option to keep all your information from windows when you convert to one of the versions of linux. And when it comes to distributions i only have 4 or 5 types, but you should try to get as many live cd's as you can and see which one suites your needs and your most comfortable..Right now I perfer Slackware.

And I didn't even think of a RAM upgrade, that would be a really quick fix that would help alot.

Oh and with the internet buttons...........Thats got to be interent explorer and something with that.....thats not because your computer is stone age slow.

*edited profanity, please try not to use it.liljim
