laptop gets really hot

Postby ansmwke » Sun Jan 01, 2006 6:47 pm

i bought a laptop not even a year and a half ago, and in teh past couple months ive noticed that it gets really hot. ill just have the laptop sit on my desk like i always have and the fan will just run non stop, then ill pick it up and put it on my lap, and it will be so hot that i cant set it on my lap. is there anything that might be making my computer work in the background like a virus ot trojan, or are my fans maybe not doing something right? please help
thank you

When you constantly run your Laptop CPU @ 100% playing games the CPU will generate a lot of heat and tight confine space of the case doesn't help.

You can D/L this motherboard monitor utility to check on the operating temperature of your CPU & Motherboard:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311

Does the laptop shut down or make any warning beeps due to the heat?

i dot play games on my laptop. the most i will do is watch a video(which is another problem i need to fix) or download stuff. I do nothing really that should make my laptop have a workout.

2 things happen with my computer
1:blue screen error messages, then it shuts down
2:shuts down from overheating

It sounds like dust and lint to me a little cleaning should fix it right up.

Go to your local office supply store and buy a “Can of Air”

Using a fine brush with the laptop off, try and clean the vents as best you can from the out side
Open up the battery access panel on the bottom of the laptop take out the battery
Use this can of air to try and blow out the vents of the laptop from inside the battery case.
You don’t want to blow through the vents into the laptop.

Some laptops have an access panel for the fan as well if that is the case then use the can of air to blow off the fan.

ok i dont think that the fans are "dusty"
ill have my laptop sitting on my carpet... and it will be quiet and not hot.
ill pick it up and the fans start speeding away as i open programs or go online... the spot where my memory is gets so hot i can almost not touch it.
and when my fans are going my computer runs so slow i cannot do much of anything on it or it takes forever to do... any suggestions to this?

What you are describing sounds like a trojan and/or spyware.

Please download , unzip it to it's own folder.
Start HijackThis and select 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
Now post the contents of the logfile back into this thread

Your log looks clean :)

When the laptop is running hot hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time to bring up the task manager.
Go to the processes tab and see what's using up all the CPU resources.
This will give me an idea on what's going on.

66% CPU usage, that's a lot

Go to the processes tab and see what's using up all the CPU resources.

it could be that the laptop has got really dusty and the fans are not doing the job that they normally do. you could take it to a hardware store and get it checked over or if your know about laptops do it yourself. My friend had this problem too. I think it is the same problem he had with dust the is producing the fans not to run as well so thats why you are probably getting heat problems. Another thing i heared he tried is to get a laptop cooling mat that reduces some heat underneath the laptop, some come with fans etc that cool it down. This may be some help too:) :)
