IBM thinkpad T30

Hey guys just wondered if you could help me with a little problem.
basicly a friend of mine has giving me this IBM Laptop to install windows 98 on it. It has windows 2000 on at the moment but windows 2000 dosnt seem to be working with the broadband starter pack she has. When we try to the load the CD from the starter pack to install the drivers it doesnt load properly. Also windows 2000 doesnt show on the system requriments on the back. only 98, ME and XP.
So i thought I would try loading 98 on it to see how that goes.
The only thing is its a IBM laptop and have never tried installing a new OS on one. Is there anything I should know about befor I begin.

oh its an IBM thinkpad T30 512ram 1.8

If you do install windows 98 you are going to need drivers for a number of things like;
Video, sound, mouse pad, usb, plus any updates from IBM
Go to IBM’s web site and download the drivers for your model number check close as there are more than one T30.

I would worry more that the install cd might be bad, have you explored the cd to see if there is a win2k directory?
Also look on the cd for any install instructions there might be something special you have to do for win2k.

Also, if XP is listed as OK, 2000 should also work. XP is a souped up version of 2000

Be careful if there are other partitions on the hard drive, I haven't messed with an IBM but usually the manufacturer has a driver partition and what also is called a sleep partition. Try to leave those intact.

hey guys thanks for your responce. Ive taken some screen shots of the screen to give you a better ideal. ive looked in the cd and cant find any help files at all

the first screen shot is of the screen not loading properly. And the second is what it should look like.

Does the machine have an Anti Virus program installed on it and is it up to date? Have you checked for Spyware and/or Maleware? Some program might be trying to phone home and isn't quite connecting.

You might also check on avalible disk space on the unit. Clean out the temporary internet files and defrag it.

Maybe someone else has an idea or two

OK ive clean the temporary internet folders and still the same problem. it Does have a antivirs program on it which I cannot turn off. But I have booted in safe mode and still the same problem.
If I installed cp onto the machine would I still need to download drivers from IBM??? also is there anything that I SHOULDNT do when installing xp???

Last effort for win2k:
A couple of things I came up with, is service pack 4 installed?
Has Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 been installed?
The install package for the broadband might need Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 and sp4.

XP install:
There is a better than 50% chance that you will have to download and install some driver from IBM.
I’ve worked on a few IBM’s I always had to get drivers but they were all reinstalls.
You might have better luck because it’s an OS upgrade but then again it is IBM

hi all. Just updated windows 2000 and install SP4 and still the same problem. hhhmmmmm staing to annoy me now. lol

Try plugging in an external monitor to the laptop and see if there are any differences

Check the fan to see that its running good. If they do need cleaning, use a vacum cleaner don't blow compressed air into the laptop--you want the dust drawn out not moved in further.

The virus scan program that you can't turn off, when were the last updates downloaded?

i have seen most people getting the partitions wrong .... so please take due care while partioning the hard disk. one should have atleast two logical hard drives.
