Virtual Memory pop-up????

Postby Liz2o » Mon Aug 21, 2006 12:04 am

My computer started gettin really slow then I started gettin a pop-up that says

Windows-Virtual Memory Minimum too low.
You system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this prosess, memory request for some applications maybe denied. For more information, see help.

Whats this mean and how can I get my memory back to where it needs to be instead of it bein too low??

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
hpothb07

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O4 - Startup: hpothb07.tif
O4 - Startup: hpothb07.dat
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://ka.bar.need2find.com/KA/menusearch.html?p=KA

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Still some Trouble???

Postby Liz2o » Wed Aug 23, 2006 9:04 am

Ok I did what you told me to do when I went to Windows Task Manager there was nothin in there to "End Task" but you told me: (they may or may not be there) I tured off the system restore and didn't have any other windows open i checked the boxes for:

04-startup:hpothb07.tif
04-startup:hpothb07.dat
08-Extracontextmenuitem:Search-http://ka.bar.need2find.com/KA/menusearch.html?p=KA

then I clicked fix like you told me to do and I got this pop-up for both files:

HijackThis
Unable to delete the file:
04-startup:hpothb07.tif

the file may be in use. Use Task Manager to shutdown the program and run HijachThis again to delete the file.

HijackThis
Unable to delete the file:
04-startup:hpothb07.dat

the file may be in use. Use Task Manager to shutdown the program and run HijachThis again to delete the file.

Then I went ahead and emptied all my TEMP. Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then I emptied the Recycle Bin, and rebooted my computer. When it came up I turned the system restore back on like you had told me to do.

Here is the logfile for the this time:

That pop-up could also mean that you don't have enough RAM for everything you're trying to run.

Press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys (Ctrl + Shift + Tap on some laptops) at the same time to launch Task Manager.

Select the Performance tab, in the Physical Memory section:

Total: - this is the total amount of Ram installed in your system

Available: - this is how much free ram you currently have available

System Cache: - this is the size of your virtual memory (hard disk space allocated to memory use)

Post these three numbers accordingly and I can tell you better what's going on.

Your system cache should be 1 and 1/2 times the size of you ram installed. So 128 x1.5=192 meg..

If you haven't messed with the paging file size, then you might be running out of hard drive space.

Right click on My Computer-->select Properties-->Select Advanced-->Click on Performance Options. When you click on change, you'll see the amount avalible. You want to up it to 192.

We have one computer in the office here that is low on disk space, one big email and we get the same error, on top of that the system will be extremely sloooooooow!

128mb ram is really bad. Especially if you're running Windows XP.

You will notice significant decrease in speed, as you download and install more programs on your computer.

A memory upgrade would help you in ways you can't imagine. I know, I used to be there. Buy a 512mb RAM stick, and put it in. You'll be good to go.

check the size of the free space on your hard drive. Right click on the C drive and select properties. See how much free space you have.

Your system wants 192 meg and its only getting 49 meg as avalible. Its sounds like you are running out of hard drive space.

If you have over 192 avalible, try defragging the hard drive. Virtual drive wants contigious space.
