First Build - Specs

Postby Inziladun » Tue Sep 19, 2006 11:35 pm

Hey guys, building my first PC soon and before I go to town ordering parts off Newegg I thought i'd get some opinions on my specs.

CASE: NZXT Nemesis Elite Aluminium Mid-Tower Case
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600(Plan to do some overclocking)
POWER SUPPLY: I'm looking for a PSU that will last me a long time for when I inevitably update my system.
MOTHERBOARD: Asus P5W-DH I975X
MEMORY: 2GB (4 sticks) PC6400 DDR2/800
VIDEO CARD: ATI Radeon X1950XTX
HARD DRIVE: Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000RPM 16MB Cache
SOUND: Creative Labs X-FI XtremeMusic 24-BIT PCI Sound Card
CPU COOLER: What would you suggest?

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows XP Home Edition w/ Service Pack 2

As I mentioned earlier, i'll be buying most if not all my parts off Newegg. Thank you for your time.

You might try two 1 gig sticks of memory, that way you have two slots free to double your memory to 4 gig.

As for power supplies count on them lasting 2 years. $50 is a medium price, say 400 watts. Touchie feelie on the Power supplies, if they look like junk, they probably are. Quality is easy to spot. The reason I say two years, they get clogged with dust and start to make noise. Quiet is nice!

You mentioned that you might want to upgrade in couple of years. You might want to forget that--things change so fast, that all sorts of form factors inherent in you new machine will be obsolete.

For example, I could upgrade my AGP video card, but I'm thinking why not a new motherboard with PCI Video card?

I've heard that Conroes tend to run better with 4 sticks, rather than 2 sticks. And 4 Gbs? Games are just now starting to take advantage of 2gbs, I doubt i'd need 4gbs before I end up giving my whole system a face lift.

As for Power Supplies, i've heard good things about OCZ GameXStream 700W. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817341002

What do you guys think?
