POPUPS AND BALLOON PERSISTENT

Postby VincentV » Mon Jan 22, 2007 8:03 pm

Hi -

Having problems with persistent popups for casinos and spyware removal programs and a balloon appearing from bottom right advising to click and remove Trojan.

I have ensured popupblocker is on in Internet Explorer, am running Norton, and auto updates is on.

I have run SpyBot Search and Destroy which elimiated some threats, though two could not be removed as they were apparently in use. Still getting the popups and this balloon. I use new Internet Explorer 7.

Have disabled System Restore and obtained this HiJackThis log file from SAFE MODE.

Please help!

Thank you

PS This logfile looks a little different to normal - is it correct, or is it just me thinking it appears different? Cheers!

Hello VincentV,

I do see a trojan running and one malware also.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

First thing I want you to do is turn system restore back on, the reasoning for doing this is if something goes drastically wrong at least you can get back to where you were.
Make sure you reboot after enabling system restore before proceeding with these fixes

It is always best to run a scan with hijackthis while in normal mode but before you do that lets fix what I can see now.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
mbssm32.exe

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: hirtellous - {fa19bd7e-50bc-4203-80ac-c4edc81ca9a3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nbbrhbd.dll (file missing)

Next Reboot in to Safe mode;
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nbbrhbd.dll

If you cannot delete these file(s)then:
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the file to be deleted on reboot:

Click open but click no to reboot now do the same for each of the following files:

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log from normal mode.

Thank you for your reply Gecko. I have been forced to create a new username as my previous password would not work, even after changing.

I followed the above instructions exactly.

Notes:-

- CTRL ALT DEL did not reveal "mbssm32.exe" running.

- "C:\WINDOWS\system32\nbbrhbd.dll" did not exist

- the computer is not my own, and I could not located any TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES FOLDER (the computer is rarely used by the owner). I was dubious about clearing the TEMP file I found in C:\DOCUMENTSANDSETTINGS\(user)\Local Manager... it seems to contain a lot of files related to various programs. It is safe to delete all these without fear of losing any important information? I do know the computer is not needed to store any important personal details at the moment, solving this trojan/malware attack is priority

- "MBS Account Manager" has installed a desktop icon and frequently pops up demanding money. I have researched this and understand it is a common scam virus/malware. Perhaps we will leave its removal (does not appear in "add/remove programs") until after this problem is fixed?

- upon checking for the items fixed by HiJackThis, it seems the line "04-HKLM [mbssm32]" has re-installed itself after I followed all your instructions

- should I look elsewhere for a TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folder, and is it essential to completely empty the TEMP folder in LOCAL SETTINGS?

Recycle bin emptied, system rebooted, new HiJackThis file in normal mode:-

(THANK YOU AGAIN - LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR FURTHER ASSISTANCE)

VncentV,

You have two programs running that are not started form the registry they are:
C:\Program Files\Key Generator\pmsngr.exe
C:\Program Files\Key Generator\pmmon.exe
These are known Trojans and are likely causing your reinfection

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
mbssm32.exe
pmsngr.exe
pmmon.exe

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Key Generator\pmsngr.exe
C:\Program Files\Key Generator\pmmon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe
C:\Program Files\Key Generator\ (delete this folder)

If you cannot delete these file(s)then:
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the file to be deleted on reboot:

Click open but click no to reboot now do the same for each of the following files:

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Last reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Procedure followed exactly.

CTRL ALT DEL did not show up any tasks to end.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mbssm32.exe did not exist to delete.

The KEYGENERATOR file could only be deleted through HiJackThis.

Recycle Bin, Temp Files, Temp Int Files all cleaned up.

Rebooted, here is HiJackThis log:-

Thank you Gecko, I've had a report back that the computer is now running fine :)

The "MBS Account Manager" I mentioned is still present on the desktop, and I could not see how to get rid of it since there is apparently nothing in Add/Remove Programs. I'm not sure if it's still popping up, but it was frequently doing this demanding money.

Can you advise on how to remove this from the computer so it doesn't come back, or should I start another thread in another section about it?

Thanks

VncentV,

Have you tried deleting the "MBS Account Manager" from the desktop?
Is this just a shortcut or the exe file itself?

Thanks Gecko, I have had a report back that the MBS Account Manager thing is gone, and they report no further problems.

Let's hope it lasts...

:)
