AOL Demo pop-up

Postby RichardG » Tue Feb 06, 2007 3:06 pm

Hi, I bought a new pc about three weeks ago and as of last night a large pop-up window opens up everytime I turn it on. It appears to be an AOL Demo and has DSGDemo written in the top left corner. I have tried several times to download Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware without success (PC will only download a few kbs before saying 'download complete'). Anyway, here is the HijackThis log file. Many Thanks:

Hello RichardG, welcome to our forum

You currently are running HijackThis from a temp folder

Please make a folder here: c:\HJT and place HijackThis.exe in that folder.

DO NOT follow the steps below until you have moved HijackThis

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
DSGDemo.exe

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOL_Demo] C:\Applications\Tool\AOL Demo\DSGDemo.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:
AOL Demo

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders

C:\Applications\Tool\AOL Demo\DSGDemo.exe
C:\Applications\Tool\AOL Demo\ <delete this folder

If you cannot delete these file(s)then:
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the file to be deleted on reboot:

Click open but click no to reboot now

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Restart your computer and post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.
