Unfortunately, no, they're not. I gave it a day or so to check whether it was just one site or two, but I'm still having the overall issue with pop-ups (even on trusted sites that normally contain none).

Famkefan,

Sorry to hear that the popups are still with you:(

Lets see if we can find out what is being loaded on startup:

Start HijackThis and click the "Open the misc tools section" make sure you are on the Msic Tools tab.
At the top in the "StartupList" section put a check next to "List also minor section"
Now click the "Generate StartupList log" button and click yes in the popup window.

Please copy the contents of the notepad window that opens and paste it into your reply here and yes it will be long.

famkefan,

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
Jump ref.exe
Win Dash.exe

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done:

Click Start and then click Search, in the section "All or part of the file name" type in
Jump ref.exe
Click the "More Advanced Options" link and put a check next to:
Search system folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders
now click the Search button.

Right click on the file that was found and select Delete.

Now do the same for each of the following:
Win Dash.exe
Install_Messenger.exe

Next click Start and select run type the below into the text box:
Wininit.ini and press enter.

In this window delete the lines bellow:
[Rename]
NUL=C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1\Content.IE5\index.dat||C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\Cookies\index.dat||C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5\index.dat||C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Install_Messenger.exe|||C

Close this window and click yes to saving changes.

Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log
(you will most likely get and error message about the files you deleted we will fix them with hijackthis)

When I try to delete Jump ref.exe or Win Dash.exe, I'm told that they're either in use or that access is denied. However, neither is present in the task/process lists in Task Manager, and I have no windows open when trying to delete them (other than the search window).

Any idea how else I can remove them?

Just wanted to add that I think there's a virus using iexplore.exe; looking at my Task Mgr, there are two instances of iexplore.exe running even though IE itself is not running (I'm using another browser). When IE is open, there are three instances. One of the instances uses between 5-7MB memory and the other uses around 65 - 70MB. I think these continuing to run in the background might be why I can't delete the pop-up related programs, Jump ref.exe and Win Dash.exe.

Famkefan,

Please download to your desktop.
Click killbox.exe, select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now click on the "All files" button
Now click on the little folder icon and browser to and trhen select:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\SECOND~1\Win Dash.exe

Now do the same for the below file:
C:\ Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\STARTE~1\Jump ref.exe

Once you have selected the two files click the red X icon
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Once you system has rebooted post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.
