So anyway, I let my girlfriend use my computer for five minutes, and she ends up getting my computer infected with what looks like a Vundo variant. I'm getting a red circle with an exclamation mark in my taskbar that tells me "Security Warning: your computer may be infected with harmful or unwanted software!" and the thing causes popups and it looks like it's constantly trying to download other trojans and downloaders to my computer.

I've tried Spybot, AdAware, and VundoFix to no avail (i.e. spybot looked like it had solved the problem, but it's back the very next day), so I was hoping one of you might be able to help me. Thanks so much in advance.

Hello Fuzzybug, welcome to our forums.

I think you may have the newest version of VX2/L2me, along with a number of other malware.
This will take several posts and replies to completely clean your system.

First please download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Fuzzybug,

Yes you do in fact have a look 2 me infection, so lets get to repairing it.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select
Option #2 for Run Fix, by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.

After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal).
L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Okay, I ran it and here's the logs you asked for. I don't know if this will help you, but after I rebooted, Symantec AV detected three threats: Two were Trojan.Vundo (fyhwbaka.exe and buvrfnal.dll) and the other was an Infostealer (iqhifpci.dll).

Also, thought I'd let you know, but it seems that every time I reboot something tries to install a randomly named .exe and a randomly named .dll, and Symantec labels the threat as a Vundo Trojan.

Fuzzybug,

It looks as though the l2mfix did not work so I think we should try something else.

Please download to your desktop.
• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix will encountered a file it can not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning:
1. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
3. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
4. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
5. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
6. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
7. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt, the AVG Anti-Spyware report and a new HiJackThis log in your reply.

Fuzzybug,

It looks like the VundoFix worked

But everything AVG found was "No action taken" it's OK we can still fix what is left another way.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Please download to your desktop but do not run it yet.

Close all other open Windows and start HiJackThis click on Do a system scan only and put a check next to each of the following entries:

Next start killbox.exe, and select the option "Delete on reboot".

Click 'File' in the killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
Now click the red X icon to delete these files on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

After the reboot post a new Hijackthis log in your reply.

Killbox couldn't get rid of any of those files because it told me that they've already been deleted. I think what happened is, even though the AVG Anti-Spyware log said "no action taken", it did quarantine everything anyway. I rebooted anyway, without any problems (no fake security alert, no pop-ups, nothing out of the ordinary), and here's my HJT log. If there's anything else I should do, let me know (like, should I delete the files in quarantine? should I ban my girlfriend from my computer? heh.)

Fuzzybug,

Your log is clean

You do need to clear you system restore points by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK and reboot your system. After the reboot turn system restore back on and reboot again.

You can leave the quarantined files in AVG alone for a few days just to make sure all your programs run OK and then you can delete the quarantined files.
