Norton internet security 2007 installation woes

Postby keybowvio » Sun Feb 25, 2007 4:04 am

well, I just installed Norton internet security 2007 on my pc, and well, as somewhat expected, all did not go as planned...

I spent about two hours with tech support, I even got "escalated" to the third level of support, and still no resolution, exactly where I was two hours ago.

I first noticed that there might be a problem when The Norton installation said that it was finished about half way through where the "installation guide" that comes in the box said it was. The installation guide said that another screen should appear that should basically get me to register my product and set up a symantec acount, these steps never occured.

so I went to the trusty owners guide to see what it had to say about this, basically, it said that if the product did not prompt for registration/activation during the install to click on the option in the security center that goes something like "acitvate my product" that option is not there

the problem as decribed by the security center is this:
"your product is not finished being configured, to finish conifiguring this product click continue"
I click continue and guess what, nothing happens
there is also a handy little button on the left that says something like:
"Your pc is unprotected, to protect, click fix"

I click fix and it takes me to another scren that shows me everything that needs to be fixed(with norton software, not pc), it tells me to check the box of every item i wish to fix, there is only one "checkable" box, so I check it and then click the continue button, it returns to the original screen and nothing happens.

as usual, the live tech support accomplished very little, except he asked me if i had several different setup files, i had none of them on my computer, or in the disk, i searched everywhere for them, they were nowhere to be found. then he says "do not worry" so I'm thinking, OMG is my computerrr like going to explode or something? (sorry, I had to put that)

after this he tells me to use the norton uninstall tool and and uninstall norton, then reinstall it using a file that was to be downloaded from a link that he gave me. Guess what? the same thing happened.

the only thing that I can think of is that I need to somhow use the "Norton configuration wizard" to finish configuring norton

*******

I'm sorry for this incredibly long and annoying post, but why can't thy make a product that will work properly on the same day you buy it, I mean they took my $50, and what did I get in return? a headache.

please, any advice, whether you know a way to resolve the issue or can reccomend a way to deal with their tech support, ya know, a way to get "escalated" to level 19 of their "support force".

Im really sorry to hear about your troubles with norton, i've looked around for a solution and couldnt come up with any. My advise to everyone is stay away from norton, its a virus of its own in my opinion. I feel the same about AOL but thats another story

I've used free antivirus programs for quite a few years now without experiencing an infection on ANY of my machines. My home network has 3 machines currently, usually 4 and my work network has 4 machines, all were running antivir but 2. The other 2 were running AVG free edition but now they are back on antivir. AVG worked great but i like antivir's interface a little better.

I mean no offense to anyone who uses and likes norton but when really compared, it sucks. Its buggy, resource hungry, and it doesnt keep you truly protected. I've cleaned virus's from many machines that had norton installed, even seen a few on this site that had various infections while using norton. Theres no such thing as 100% effective against virus's but theres certainly better things to use that dont cost anything.

Im sorry for the reserved rant, i hope someone offers you a solution if norton is what you wish to run.

If you look for alternatives,

Another one that has several awards and great features

keybowvio ,

Let me guess, you had a Norton product installed on this system at one time before you tried to install the Norton internet security 2007.

What you need to do is first download the
Now run this tool to completely remove Norton from your system and then reboot your system.

Now reboot again, after the second reboot you should now be able to install Norton without errors.

so, wait, you're saying that just rebooting your system once after running the Norton removal tool isn't enough?!

The furstration sets in, I've re-installed norton two times already, (after running te norton removal tool and rebooting once) never did I think to reboot twice

thank you

oh and, as you guessed, the first time I installed norton there was an older norton product, seeing how I did not know how to get rid of it, i just un-installed in from the add or remove programs.

I'll do that this aternoon and let you know how it goes

I followed the procedure that you gave precisely, and still the same result

Norton says that I need to finish conigifuring my product, when i click on some things it says that I need to run the configuration wizard.

any more ideas?

I actually got some seemingly very good advice from the Symantec online tech support. they told me that I need to upgrade my product (for free)to the internet security 2007.2 (link provided:)

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice ... wnload.jsp

so, Bilal (tech support person) told me to upgrade first and then to follow these steps to edit the registry:

1 Exit all programs.

2 Click Start > Run.

3 In the Open box, type the following text:
regedit

4 Click OK.
5 Go to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
6 In the right pane, if it is there, click the following value to select it:
AuditInProgress
7 Press Delete

8 Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
9 Go to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
10 In the right pane, if it is there, click the following value to select it:
AuditInProgress
11 Press Delete

12 Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
13 Exit the Registry Editor.
14 Restart the computer.

Step C: Turn on Norton files that have been turned off

he referred me to this link regarding the registry deletions:

http://service1.symantec.com/support/sh ... enDocument

it really amazes me the difference that the individual tech person will make on finding the solution, thanks Bilal!!
(oh yeh, and lets hope it works)

Keybowvio not wanting open a can of worms but i use Norton 2007 internet security i agree with Liljim regarding Nortons issues and i will opt for steganos internet security when my years subsciption runs out. But in the meantime have you downloaded the add on pack for Norton 2007 click the link below assuming your using windows xp if your using vista i believe its avaliable at the end of the month

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/cu ... 2616462646

Features Include see below (Why these were not included originally is beyond me)

Norton AntiSpam
Automatically filters out annoying and dangerous fraudulent or phishing emails from your email in-box.

Norton Parental Control
Blocks access to Web sites not suitable for children.

Confidential Information Blocking
Alerts you if unauthorized sensitive personal information is being sent out over the Internet via email, instant messaging or web pages.

Ad Blocking
Keeps banner ads and pop-up and pop-under windows off the screen for faster Web browsin

Hope this help make a poor product better for at least a year
