Illusia,

Seeings how you are able to run your renamed Hijackthis lets try a direct approach this time.

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Start HijackThis and click the "Open the misc tools section" button now click the "Open Process Manager" button.
Select the entry C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja\services.exe and then click the "Kill Process" button.
Now do the same for the following entries:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe

Next click the "Back" button and then click the "Delete an NT Service" button
Type svchosts into the text box and then click "OK"
Select no if it asks to reboot now.

Now click the "Back" button in the lower right corner.

Click the "Scan button" and when it's finished put a check next to the following entries:

Click the "Fix Checked" button and click ok in the popup window, close Hijackthis.

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.


Click killbox.exe that should still be on your desktop and select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now click on the "All files" button, next click "Options" and click on "Delete Directories"

Next copy the below red part:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja


Click 'File' in the killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
Now click the red X icon to delete these files on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Once your system has rebooted post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

I'm sorry, I'm unable to run hijackthis. It only stays open long enough to run the scan - I have to try it 100 times to get a scan and a log. It doesn't stay open long enough for me to read the buttons, let alone select what I need.

When I rename the log it saves, that is when I can open it and copy and paste to here, that is all.

the svchosts.exe are still there, and now theres an unsvchosts.exe as well.....

Illusia,

I think the svchosts.exe is being reinstalled by the below file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja\services.exe
The problem with trying to stop this process is that is named the same as a windows process, services.exe.

Let's see if we can get Norton Anti virus to do the work for us.

First we need to make sure Norton is up to date.
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Now double click the 20070216-019-x86.exe file and click yes to update now.
This will take some time to complete just wait for it.

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Once in safe mode click Start > My Computer now right click on your C:\ drive and select "Scan with Norton anti virus"

Once the virus scan is complete reboot into normal mode and see if you can run Hijackthis.
If you can then please follow the previous Hijackthis instructions.

Foiled Again

Hi Gecko,

I'm sorry to drag this out. I've run Nortons numerous times. It's picked up nothing. Yet I'm still infected. Even my adware and spyware software picks up more than Nortons does. And yeah, I updated it! I've decided it's useless and wish I hadn't paid for another year.

I'm still unable to use hijack this - still only stays open long enough for a log (if I'm lucky). My system is running slower and slower, and it's become difficult to get on line. When I am on line, (excuse my non-technological language, I have no idea what I'm talking about), I think Symantec is doing something - all those hosts that have taken over....???? So nothing else works.

Any other ideas?

Illusia,

I'm sorry that my instruction failed Could you please try the rest of my instructions.

Click killbox.exe that should still be on your desktop
Click "Options" and click on "Remove Directories"
Type the below into the text box:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja

Now click the red X icon to delete these directory on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

After the reboot see if hijackthis will run, if it does post a new hijackthis log

The Outcome

Hi Gecko,
I followed your instructions.
In the Add/Remove panel I found need2find, but when I clicked "remove" I was told that it wasn't there anyway.
SmitRem took only three minutes to complete, and it didn't appear to remove anything.
In Hijackthis I found 016 and 023, but not F3 or 08. I clicked "fix checked" and was advised that I'd need to reboot to remove these items. I did not reboot at this time.
AVG picked up nothing.
The "Search" step I ended up not understanding. I searched for files with ".exe" but didn't know what file exactly I was supposed to be looking for. I did not know what location I was supposed to copy down.
I ran killbox, typing in the qhwtbviuja file. I was then prompted to reboot, which I did.
I had trouble running hijack this again, but managed to get a log. Here it is:

Illusia,

I think I have found a removal tool that should fix the main problem for you.
Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from


First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot.

Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
Once open, click the button labeled "Search and Destroy"
<<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>

When scanning is finished, you will be prompted to reboot only if infected. Click OK
Now click the "REBOOT" Button.

After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.
A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish

Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log

Hiya,
I could not run MsnVirRem in normal mode, so switched to safe mode.
After a quick scan it found two problems and prompted me to reboot.
After rebooting, I received no messages and the system was as slow as usual.
I could not open notepad to view the log without renaming it.
I had the usual trouble running Hijackthis as usual. During one attempt, I spotted the F3 problem and clicked fix this and it seemed to disappear from the resulting log.

Illusia,

Ok we're getting some where now. :!:

Reboot into safe mode;

Start Killbox and select delete file on reboot and type or copy the below:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja\services.exe

Chose NO to reboot now.

Next run MsnVirRem.exe again, rebooting when it asks to.

This time make sure after the reboot that you run MsnVirRem.exe again as soon as the system boots to the desktop.

Then reboot the system one more time and see if you can run hijackthis
