Networking On XP Pro

Postby Swiss88 » Tue May 01, 2007 6:58 pm

Ok .... This is a problem + 1/2 lol

Here i go ::

I have Xp Pro on my PC ... Main computer which does all the tech stuff.

( I have my own user as admin but also have access to the administrator account )

I have NTL Cable Modem (broadband) ---> Belkin 802.11g Router ---> Ethernet cable into my PC

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next I have another PC with XP pro on it ::

This is just my brothers PC which has music and games on ... you know wot little brothers do ;) this is connected to my router via a Belkin Wireless Adapter

Now what I wish to be able to do is access his computer to put files on it and access his files to make sure he isnt doing anything stupid with the PC.

I have just got it working on my m8s PC and Laptop but it was a fluke tbh lol ... i just ended up getting it to work with abit of tweaking ... on these two PC's i cannot seem to do it .

Please, ALL help would be greatly appreciated

First of all you both will have to be in the same work group.

Right click on My Computer select Properties select the Computer name tab.
Most likely "WORKGROUP" will be the work group name if not you will need to make them match.
Towards the bottom click the Change button make sure that work group is checked and name them the same.
Reboot the system if you have made any changes.

On your brother's system go to My Computer and then right click on the C:\ drive select "Properties"
Click on the "Sharing" tab click If you understand the risk but still want to share the root of the drive, click here.
Check the Share this folder on the network check box and Check the Allow network users to change my files.

On your system launch Windows Explorer and select "Tools" and select "Map network drive".
Click the browse button now click the + next to Microsoft Windows Network click on your work group and select your brother's drive.

OK ... Ive just used abit of my knowlegde and tried to ping each comp from each one ...

Im comp A ( main PC ... Tech Stuff )
Bro Comp B

I can access the network (MSHOME) on comp A but cannot access comp B because of above error messege.

I cannot ping comp B from comp A .... i dont get a reply ( ive tried adding his ip to zonealarm firewall but with no luck )

I can ping comp A from comp B but cannot get to the network ..

I have now figured out how to solve this problem lol ... ive just been messing around and saw i left this meesge open .. all i did woz tried disabling the firewall on comp B and hey presto .. I set the access to medium and now i can get in and out :D

Is there any ways to send a quick messege to him ? i noticed that if u CTRL+ALT+DEL you have a users option ... is that a way of doing it or is that for .net or summet ?

Kind Regards

I hope this message helps someone else in the future :D

ONE LAST THING

What is happening, is that each computer doesn't know who is trying to access it. On both machines, right clck on My Computer and left click on Manage. Click on "Local Users and groups" and select "Users." On the top menu click on "Actions" and select "New User." Add a user like Tom with a password of 123. Then reboot both systems and when you go to get into the other computer, you will have a login screen (if you have shared the drive or folder) your login name of tom and 123 should get you in.

By default, windows XP locks down the traditional IPC and guest access and forces windows sharing to control access to each PC.

If you do not have shares defined on the computer you'r trying to access, windows will report it as unaccessible. Once you create shares, you will be able to see each of his drives. Just remember when sharing to change permissios and allow everyone full access (provided you have your router configured correctly, this will not cause a sigificant security issue).

Your other option (now that you have disabled the internal firewalls) is to install something like UltraVNC onto each system, and use that to check his system (although it will interrupt his use of it at the time).

There is a third.. and slightly more complicated but useful solution. You can modify XP Pro in such a way that it allows remote administration Terminal Services style. Aloowing you to log in remotely as Administrator to your brothers PC while he is logged in as himself locally.
