Cable modem speeds

Postby Junior_co » Tue May 01, 2007 11:27 am

My Better Half has been having trouble with her trading software. While the problem is still ongoing, it doesn't appear to be on our end.

BUT, while in the trouble shooting process, she went to Comcast (our internet provider) and got a new cable modem. While there, "they" told her that she could upgrade her 6MB modem to an 8MB modem for ~$30 (I think that's the amount "they" said)

Is this a legitimate offer, or is it a bunch of bunk???

Good on ya

Junior_co,

I think it's bunk myself
I have comcast also and my modem is almost four years old now.
They told me the same thing if I wanted to get 8mb I would need a new modem.
I showed them my speeds and they said you must have one of the special modems, ya right.

Junior_co,

I used for the above speed test using the L.A. server.

For a local speed test for me I use of Florida with the following results:

File size transferred : 14.75 MB (15468724 bytes)
Total time taken : 7.55 seconds (7551 milliseconds)
Throughput : 2048.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 2.05 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 16384.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 16.38 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

On downloads of big files I have seen as high as 12mbps constant, if it's a fast server.

Follow up,

My Comcast modem died yesterday (5/14/07) around 10:00 in the morning. :(
Comcast replaced it with a new one less than 3 hours later.
Yes you read that right they came to my house in less than 3 hours after I called.

I checked my speeds while they were still here just to see if my download speed increased like they said it would.
My download speed improved very little :(
But my upload speed tripled. :D
