Computer won't stay on, blue screen of death

Postby de_budding » Sat May 26, 2007 2:28 pm

Hi,
I am just wondering before i delve to deep if anyone knows of this problem, I start the computer... the desktop loads up and within 5 minuets i get a quick flash of the blue screen of death and the computer restarts.

I gave teh RAM a gentle clean and that didn't do anything, i also tried in 'my computer' setting having 'no paging file' checked for a start up (i only just had enough time to do this before teh computer restarted) but this didn't work.

It is very quick, within 5 minuets of the desktop being loaded the computer goes down. On a couple of boot ups the computer had tried to boot from disk for no reason, so i checked the HDDs where connected properly. One of teh hard disks is SATA and one IDE
it has a gigabyte mother board
2 gig ram audigy gold sound card nvidia gforce graphics card.

Any ideas?.. please.
Many thanks,
Dan

Hello de_budding, and welcome to our forums

First lets see if we can get the error message on the BSOD.

Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery section
Settings button > System Failure section > check the box 'Write an event to the system log' and uncheck 'Automaticly Restart'

Now the next time it happen it will not restart and you will be able to write down the error message and post it here.
You will have to hold in the start button in for a few seconds to turn the system off

Have you tried booting into safe mode and see if you have the same problem?
Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

If system does not reboot in safe mode then it is not hardware related so you will need to look in the event viewer.
Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer > look in the system section.

You are looking for any red icons, double click on the icon.
Click inside the 'Description' section then highlight the text and copy and paste it into notepad.
At the bottom of the event window check 'words' and then copy and paste that text also.
Then paste it all into your reply to this thread.

de_budding,

It looks like your Avast AntiVirus could be causing the problem.

I would suggest that you try uninstalling Avast AntiVirus and see if your problem goes away.
You should be able to uninstall it when in safe mode.

Try disconnecting all of your USB devices and reboot. your machine might be having problems allocating USB resources.

Just to add on to what Geckos working with you on,

Open the case up and turn the system on. Check to make sure all the fans are running good. Make sure all of the cards are well seated into the motherboard.

The 5 minute interval before the blue screen could indicate a video card overheating or bad drivers.

The IDE and SATA hook up makes me wonder, can you see and access both drives in "My Computer?"

Have you added any new hardware or updated any drivers recently?

No, but what you might want to do is reinstall the original video card drivers and see if that corrects the problem. Bad video drivers could cause this problem. Also, did disabling the Network card change anything were there less errors on a fresh boot in the event viewer file?

Ok i got distracted by a friend who suggested it could be the HDD using SATA, so i unplugged it and hey presto the computer doesn;t shut down now. I also asked windows not t orestart after system failure and here is teh error which sems to be somthing not to do with HDD.
DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Ndis.sys
Stop 0x000000D1

I googled all that and got a couple of different things to do with PCI slots sharing IRQs? or a logitech mouse driver out of date :S.

Well does this mean that using SATA is the problem? Or somthing on the hard disk?

Dan.

I don't think that the SATA drive is the issue. As I mentioned previously, having both IDE and SATA together doesn't seem like a good combo.

The SATA drive should be your main drive. disconnect the IDE drive and install XP on it or ghost the IDE to the SATA. The increased pick up in performance is hard to miss. I'm just guessing here, but the difference in performance between the two drives could be causing the issue. Especially if the OS is on the IDE and the program is on the SATA.

Are you still getting that NDIS error after disconnecting the SATA hard drive? The NDIS error could be from an network card or two different installs of XP in conflict. Is there and operating system on both hard drives?
