annoying hardware

Postby robbro » Sun Jun 24, 2007 4:40 pm

i got a problem i cant seem to fix and evaluate as my pc cuts off before i get a chance too!

What happens lately is my monitor just goes black screen after a few mins . im thinkin its my gcard overheating or my powersupply but im not sure now...

I opened up the gcard and put some new thermal paste on the GPU and the cpu and the temperatures seem stable . on motherboard monitor program i have it states the following temperatures :

case 32 C cpu 30 c and cpu socket 21 c. so the temperature seems not so high to me... so anyidea what could be the problem??

Also notice i get a crackling/static sound from the speakers before the monitor cuts off. the monitor is fine as ive tested it on my xbox 360 and it was fine for hours.. so im definately sure its the computer !

If anyone here can help that would be great as im going mad here trying to figure out >_< :(

Hi robbro,

What does your event viewer say?
Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer > look in the system section.
You are looking for any red or yellow icons, double click on the icon to get the full error message

Also have you checked the PSU fan?

Do you know what these two processes that you mentioned are for?
SandBox
VFILT

Because when I search for VFILT I come across references to trojan/keylogger.

Your log is clean :)

Do you have a sound card or onboard sound?

If it's a sound card try removing it from Device Manager and then remove the card itself then try it.

I have seen sound cards do strange things, my wife's system would not boot turned out to be the sb live card.
As soon as I removed the card the system booted just fine.

When this happens does the system shut down/power off or do you just loose the display?

robbro,

I think you're right, it does sound like the PSU is the culprit.

The only way to tell for sure is to try a known good PSU.
I say this because I have had brand new PSUs be dead right out of the box.
