"Limited or no connectivity"...Internet problem

Hi guys..my fathers PC has had this happen to it in the last week or so. Ive had a quick look. Rebooted the modem, done a virus scan ( which came up clean with Ad-aware & Pc CIllin 2007), done a system restore...all to no avail.

He's running XP SP2 with firefox....and all physical connections seem to be intact.

Any ideas ??

Please download HijackThis http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip and save it to your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Please download to your desktop. Do not run it yet you will need it later.

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:
O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe (file missing)

Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis

Reboot into Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.


Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Click killbox.exe, now select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now click on the "All files" button (it will turn green)

Next copy the below red part:
C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe


Click 'File' in the killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
Now click the red X icon to delete these files on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Once your system has rebooted post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

(your might get an error about lsass.exe not found, if so we will fix it)

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:
O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe (file missing)
Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis


Reboot into Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click "Delete an NT service"
Paste the below into the popup box:
C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe
Now click OK and close Hijackthis.

Click killbox.exe, now select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now click on the "All files" button (it will turn green)

Next copy the below red part:

C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe


Click 'File' in the killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
Now click the red X icon to delete these files on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Once your system has rebooted post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

I followed your instructions again gecko but Hijack This and killbox both told me that entry didnt exist in the registry anymore and that it had been removed by an external system..ie. me.
Yet it still exists on the new scan ??? Im wondering now would I be better wiping the system and re-installing windows from fresh ??

I don't think it's time to format yet I still have a few things to try first.

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double-click on lsass.exe
(make sure you are selecting the right one C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe)

Once you see this screen write down the name of any files that are there.
Then post back here with the list of files from above

We have to stop a Security service it looks like and then I will have you install AVG anti spyware to remove the rest of the infection.

Click Start > Run and type in Services.msc
Click OK
In the Sevices box, click the Extended tab.

Scroll down to:
Local Security Authority Subsystem Service
Click Stop, then Disable

Reboot your computer.


Open HijackThis.
Click on 'Open the miscellaneous tools section'
Click on 'Delete an NT Service'
Paste in this;
lsass
and click 'OK'


Please download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

1. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
3. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
4. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
5. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
6. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
7. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan in your reply a long with a new hijackthis log.

Hi Gecko. I followed ur instructions and the internet came back up again before I scanned with AVG spyware. The trend Micro AV wont update due to the internet connection but the net works??.

If the internet is back then we successfully stopped and removed the NT service.
You should now be able to remove the registry reference using Hijackthis.

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:
O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe (file missing)

Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis

Avg only found cookies nothing else

Your system should be clean.
