slow dsl

Postby PearlJamaholic » Mon Sep 10, 2007 5:08 am

ok im not too sure what the problem is other than we got dsl a few months ago and its really slow. we had cable so when we switched to dsl i figured it was just me having to readjust to a slower connection. but when i talk to anyone that has the same isp as me they dont seem to have the same problems. sometimes i cant even check gmail cause it loads so slow.

ive checked the speed online with those little tester things and sometimes i get speeds barely above dialup. were supposed to get 256, i think. thats the slowest dsl they have. so we shouldnt be any worse than that. we have two computers on this. but i think i should be able to get better than 60 when im the only one on a computer, right? the upload rate is usually really good sometime twice as high as my download.

well today i went to the 192.168.1.254 and checked the connectivity and i did find this

under internet it has a big red x and this
"Connectivity to Gateway (66.109.238.135)"

im not sure what this means or even how to fix it.

thats all i really have that says something isnt right. maybe im wrong to assume this but i always thought dsl was supposed to be a good deal faster than dsl. sometime i really swear i got better speeds in 98 in the old dialup days.

edit: example of a big difference. i know part of it is downgrade of cable to dsl but with cable i could get speeds of 300 on a bt, with this dsl im lucky if i hit above 20. is 20 a normal download speed for 256 dsl?

PearlJamaholic,

I'm not too sure what you are getting at that ip 192.168.1.254.
Usually your router is at http://192.168.1.1 and your modem is at http://192.168.100.1

You could run the tweak test found at

I know when I had dsl I had trouble with wet phone lines after a good rain and my speeds would drop down to almost nothing.

If nothing else seems to work you could always try posting a hijackthis log.

that tweak test keeps hanging. the only firewall i have is xp firewall. im also not sure what they mean with "make sure your browser can make requests to port 8085 and 8086" i use IE and i havent messed with anything that has to do with ports.

my router thing is speedtouch or whatever. so i need to use 192.168.1.254 to get to the settings screen to open up ports and that stuff.

PearlJamaholic

Let's try something simple first so I can get a look at what's going on.

Open up a command box (start > run > cmd > ok) and type the following:
ping /t yahoo.com (note the space between the g and the / and between the t and y) and press enter.

Let it run about 25 – 30 times and then press Ctrl + C to stop it.

Now type :
tracert yahoo.com (note the space between the t and the y)

When it's done right click inside the command box and select "Mark" now click and drag your mouse over the text to highlight it and press "Enter" to copy the text.

Paste this copied text into your reply

PearlJamaholic,

Well nothing really wrong with those numbers, although a couple of the pings were real slow but they didn't time out.

In the speedtouch's web interface go to Home - Broadband connection: in the main window, click on `View more` just below DSL Connection. Then you will see a list where Bandwidth Up/Down are stated.

What are the numbers listed for upload and download?

PearlJamaholic,

That's really odd, my super port scanner program resolves that IP to 66.109.238.135.static.dejazzd.com.
But it has no open ports at all and as you know you have a dynamic I.P. so I find that a little confusing.

I have no idea the signal ranges for your speedtouch modem/router, nor what your ISP settings and ranges are.
I've never even worked on a speedtouch, all the information I've given is from google.

I do know that line noise can drastically affect download/connection speeds.
You can eliminate anything on your end that could cause noise by unplugging anything connected to your phone line, phone, fax, answering machine.

The could check with for a firmware update to your model of speedtouch.

Otherwise, god forbid, it's call your ISP :(
