Hello SwaggMan, and welcome to our fourm.

First download from Gateway the file name is D00377-002-001.exe save it to your desktop.
Double click the downloaded file to start the self extractor, the file will be extracted to C:\Cabs\D00377-002-001\Setup.exe

Next right click on My Computer and select properties click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) in front of Sound, video and games controllers, and then double-click the AC97 reference.

Click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall.
In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.
Make sure you uninstall the drivers for all the AC97 references.

Now navigate to C:\Cabs\D00377-002-001\ and click the Setup.exe
Follow all onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

SwaggMan,

In Device Manager do you have any other yellow icons?

Have you installed any chip set drivers?

SwaggMan,

Please download and extract the files, you will get a folder named everest.
Now click the everest.exe file inside to launch it, click on multimedia and then click on PCI/PnP Audio please note what it says.

Next on the left side click Motherboard and then click chipset now scroll down to the chip set manufacture.
Please post back with the information on the pci/pnp audio and the chip set manufacture.

Ok... I took your idea with the everest, and my friend has a program called driver magician. it gave me the chipset info for the sound driver which came out to be
IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller

did a google on that which brought me to the forum http://forums.driverguide.com/showthread.php?t=21407

it directed me to hp's website which was a conexant audio driver. installed that and it now works. they were having the problem with the gateway mx series laptop as well. I was very disapointed with Gateways tech support. they basicly told me they couldnt do anything else for me.

Anyway it works now. HP also had a driver for the modem, so everything is in order now thank you for the help
