PC Freeze when Network enabled

Hello jrmorgan56 and welcome to our forums.

It sounds like you have a spyware or trojan infection or both.

Please download HijackThis http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip and save it to your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

Another thing you might want to try. Go to My Computer, double click my computer and then right click the c drive. Select properties and then on tools select 'Error Checking.' It will say that it can't do it and do you want to do it on next boot, say yes and reboot.

Your log file is clean, no signs that it's spyware or trojan related.

What's odd is that it happens on both onboard and the pci card.
There should be something in you event logs that will point us in a direction.

Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer > look in the system section.

You are looking for any red icons, double click on the icon.
Click inside the 'Description' section then highlight the text and copy and paste it into notepad.
At the bottom of the event window check 'words' and then copy and paste that text also
Then past it all into your reply to this thread.

If you don't show any errors in the event viewer then:
Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery section
Settings button > System Failure section > check the box 'Write an event to the system log'

Then recreate the freezing reboot and look in the event viewer.

There were no errors generated during the freeze up process for System. I've tried several times by recreating the freeze but nothing ever posts to the queue (just the normal boot up Information events). I am set up for writing errors, just none occurs for the freeze up.

I'm guessing that this is probably motherboard-related and will just have to get a new one. I am just thrown for a loop that putting a new NIC in does the same thing.

To recreate the freeze up, I go into device manager and re-enable my 1394 Net Adapter and NVIDIA nForce Netowrking Controller and then reboot. When it reboots, it will freeze up within 2 minutes without me even plugging in a network cable. So I reset the PC and when it boots up again I hurry and disable these same devices so the PC does not freeze.
(I just did the freeze again with enabling only my NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller).

I haven't tried reinstalling Windows XP but I really think I have an actual hardware problem. The NF4UK8AA WinFast mobo doesn't exactly have the highest reviews out there but most of the complaints are from those that have tried overclocking and I never do anything like that.

I hate to give in to a hardware problem without first checking all other possibilities.

You could have a rootkit that is causing all of this.
I suggest that you download extract it to your root like this:
C:\rkr\RootkitRevealer.exe

Close all other programs, windows and disable your screen saver before you start RootkitRevealer.
While RootkitRevealer is running, you shouldn't do anything at all with the PC.
Put down the mouse, back away slowly, and let the program do its work.

Start RootkitRevealer.exe and press the Scan button.
It will take some time to finish an hour is common so just wait it out.
Once the scanning is finished RootkitRevealer will create a log, please copy the contents of that log into your reply.

Well, I disabled it in the BIOS and tried another NIC again. It still freezes on bootup. If I disable it quickly, the PC is ok. If I then "enable" it, the PC does not freeze but if you reboot the PC it will definitely freeze.

Yes I do have my CD.

The time my PC did not lock up after enabling, I plugged the cable in and opened up Yahoo...it worked for a minute before locking up again. I've tried this with my antivirus off just in case it was doing something.

If you have an actual windows xp cd and not an OEM restore disk then you can run the system file checker.
What this does is check and replaces as needed you system files.

Put the windows cd in your cd/dvd drive.
Click start > ren and type : cmd and press enter
Next type
sfc /scannow (note the space between the c and the /) and press enter

Let it run it will takes some time to complete.

After another long period of trying to make do, I've discovered a way to use the PC and get internet access.

I tried that system file checker and that didn't fix or find anything. But now I am inclined to agree with you that it is software and not hardware related.

To make a long story short, I disabled auto updates and AVG antivirus. I booted up the computer and quickly disabled my lan card. Then I unplug my cable modem. I re-enable the lan card and plug the modem back in and then auto repair the connection. IT WORKS. I can be online as long as I want UNTIL I REBOOT THE PC. If I reboot the PC, I have to repeat the above process!


I'm shocked and clueless. But at least I can get back to some Warcraft and Vassal. I hope that if anything you guys might have gotten something out of this oddball problem.
