clennonuk,

Lets see if we can get more information on your error.

Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer > look in the system section.

You are looking for any red icons, double click on the icon.
Click inside the 'Description' section then highlight the text and copy and paste it into notepad.
At the bottom of the event window check 'words' and then copy and paste that text also
Then past it all into your reply to this thread.

If you don't show any errors in the event viewer then:
Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery section
Settings button > System Failure section > check the box 'Write an event to the system log'

clennonuk,

That second one helped a lot.
Did you install a DVD decoder that uses the Mpegport.sys driver around the time this started?

This gives you a couple of work a rounds.

clennonuk,

To find out what program or driver is using the Mpegport.sys file download

Extract the three files into their own folder, click on procexp.exe.
Now click on Find and put Mpegport.sys in the text box and click Search
The results will tell you what program or driver is using the Mpegport.sys file.

If it's a program you can live without just uninstall it.

If it's the driver for your DVD burner then you will have to use MS's work around.

Turn off the DEP feature in Windows XP SP2
If you need the functionality of the incompatible driver, you can turn off the DEP feature. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer.

2. During the restart process, press F8.

3. Use the arrow keys to select a Safe Mode option, and then press ENTER.

4. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

5. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

bootcfg /raw “/noexecute=alwaysoff /fastdetect” /id 1

a. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.

b. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.

c. In the Startup and Recovery dialog box, click Edit.

d. Change the /noexecute option to the following:

/noexecute=alwaysoff

e. On the File menu, click Save, and then click Exit.

f. Click OK two times.

6. Restart your computer.

clennonuk,

Usually those last three errors would all relate to ram going bad.

However I did find with a hot fix download link.
It's worth trying anyway otherwise you should check your ram.
