New Wireless Router Needed?

Postby Torquay-Pete » Tue Dec 18, 2007 7:36 pm

HI guys
I am after a bit of advice about wireless routers. My Broadband provider is giving me 10 MB this has been measured at 9.4MB at Speedtest.net which is fine by me. However when I run through a linksys router (This is for the wifes Laptop wireless network) the speed drops to around 5 MB. My ISP says that this is about right and there is no faulty equipment, What I need to know is will every router cut internet speed by 50%? or can I get 10MB through a better router? If so what specs should I be looking for when upgrading my router. This needs to be compatible with XP and VIsta.
Thanks in advance as usual Pete

Torquay-Pete,

This is the best site I could find for comparing router throughputs

Now it took a little reading to understand how the results are derived.
There are are several routers listed that have a much better throughput than what you currently have for wireless.
