New pump

Postby Psymon » Sat Jan 19, 2008 1:35 pm

Over Crimbo, the pump for my watercooling kicked the coolant tank... sorry.
I used to have , which was part of .
To replace it, I ordered .

I made the order with www.xcase.co.uk because every other website I checked on was out of stock or more expensive. The extra cost was mainly because xcase didn't charge for delivery, which is nice. So, 2 weeks after I place the order they finnally get round to shipping it to me
In that time I could only use my PC in 10 min bursts before I had to shut it down or it would shut itself down.

So, when it arrived I got straight onto replacing the old one. This bit got me a little confused. I managed to take off the old pump with no difficulty or mess, which was good. Thing is, what I put in was a light green coolant, fairly see through. What I got out was an opaque dark blue liquid. Any ideas? Copper?

So eventually I drain all the old coolant, even getting someone to hold the tubing over a bowl while i pick up my PC and tilt it around :D
I also took out the coolant tank to completly empty it. I added a bit of warm water and shook it around to really clean it. Bad move? :o

Fitting the new pump wasn't so smooth...
The screwing on the inlet was fine, but with the outlet, after screwing it on all the way it actually lost it's grip (so to speak) and I could pull the tube off with little effort. Eventually I decided to not tighten it all the way, as at some point it became harder to tighten so I assumed this would clamp around the tube fairly well.

Now here come the part I wish I'd taken a screen shot of.
Pump installed, tank topped up with new . Turn on my pc, and none of the coolant is flowing out of the tank :(
So, with what little time I had before the CPU overheated, I whipped up a website about how to install water cooling.
They suggested only adding a bit of coolant and tilting the tank to encourage the coolant around the system, then adding more and repeat.
So, with my PC still on, and the CPU at about 70°C now, I start rocking my pc back and forth. While I'm doing this I see bubbles coming from the pump towards the tank, so finally coolant is working it's way into the pump. But it's still not going through the whole system so my CPU is still getting hotter, 90°C now. I found that it usually reboots when it hits 100°C, so now I'm starting to get worried. I keep rocking it back and forth and suddenly it kicks off and water shoots through the whole system and I hear it tricking in the tank, which isn't far off empty now :P
What I wanted a screenshot of was the graph from speedfan.
It was a straight line from 30°C all the way to about 98°C and then nearly a vertical line down to ~ 40°C. Just in time

So, all done. This pump is quiter than the old one and it doesn't vibrate as much. I kept the old one in a little box I made lined with sponge to stop it rattling against the case. Probably insulated and made it hotter... Shortend it's life a bit...

Meh, I'm really happy with this new pump and how easy I found it to install.

Random I know, but I just wanted to document it somewhere :)

End.
