Designing a band logo

Hi there. I'm in the process of getting posters made up for my rock band. I was wondering what software is out there for easy designing of a logo or poster.It will cost me a good few bob to get one designed for me.

Logos should be designed in a vector based software like Adobe Illustrator or Coral Draw.
You can also do them in Photoshop but using "Shapes and text only" or saving them in .pdf format.
The reason for using vector based drawings is they can be increased in size for like a banner and not become pixlated.

As for a poster you can use Photoshop just make sure you start with at least a 300dpi document, otherwise the print quality will sub-standard.
