Ok so small update.

I installed EasyBCD 1.7.2, and i used it to delete the vista bootloader. So now the pc boots straight into xp, which is good. So i think im going to delete the vista partition and try and reinstall linux and see if that makes the boot loader go back.

its all a bit daunting when the idea of screwing up the bootloader would leave me very stuck!
