HIS Radeon 4850 Problem

Postby rohaninabout » Fri Oct 31, 2008 1:17 pm

Hello.

I just got a new computer, and installed it from scratch - and I bought a HIS Radeon 4850.

When I power on my computer, there is no video output and the monitor is blank (light just stays orange), and there are 2 red constant lights on the back of the card. I think the GFX card may be faulty? Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

There are four LED's on the 4870/4850. I'm not sure what the order is per card but here are descriptions of each:

D1601 - Shows overheating

D1602 - Power connector #1 removed

D1603 - Power connector #2 removed

D1604 - GPU fail

You may want to check your power supply as well. You may not be getting enough power to your card. I have a 3850 and had to go up to a 750 watt from a 550watt.

Thanks for that.

I dont think its the power supply, I just bought a brand new 750W one. Pretty much could power a city haha.

I'm not too sure what the lights are referring two.. but you mentioned 'power connector 2'. As far as I can see, theres only 1 PCI-E power connector on the card?

Any ideas?

There are 2 outputs on the card.. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to just use one? (if so which one? :S), or if I'm supposed to use both for some reason.

Any ideas guys? thanks

Well the light sequence thing applies to more than one card, but yours may not be one with dual PCI connectors. I wouldn't worry about it. But so far all I have read on that kind of issue points to power supply or dead card.

Bugga. Thanks for the info though! =)

I'll take it back into the shop and see what they can make out of it.

I wonder if your new PC comes with onboard VGA.

Nope, no onboard video - just gfx card with 2 DVI slots.

Update: MY BAD! I reread the manual today, "don't forget to connect the 6 pin north power plug, otherwise your system will not boot!"

-facepalms-

All fixed now, but my HIS 4850 gfx card is running REALLY toasty, I touch it and I could literally fry an egg on it. Any ideas guys? I think its supposed to run quite hot and has a 'high heat resistance threshold'

Anyone else have the same card that runs rather warm?

Cheers

You know, I was going to mention plugging in the extra power but thought 'naah, he won't have missed that'

In the reviews I've seen for the 48## range, most say that the card will run hot and loud.

I built a PC with one but forgot to check it's temp so I can't say for myself how I found it.

Putting a case fan on the side panel of the case just right next to the video card may help cool the video card.

This may let you have a longer lasting video card.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bill :), I have it sussed now though :D

The stock fan speed was set at 20% or something stupid, so I cranked it up to 90% and its running at about 40C now.

You are welcomed rohaninabout,

Cooler system temp will be good to other parts of your PC as well.

Glad to hear your PC ok now!
Cheers!
