Got probs after my nwe upgrade :-(

Postby judgekane » Fri Jan 16, 2009 4:38 pm

First, hey guys,

Right I'm running a:-
AMD 64 Athlon X2 6000+ (3.01Ghz)
MSI NX8800GT 512Mb
4Gb Ocz Ram PC2 6400 800Mhz (I think)
Gigabyte S-series MB GeForce6100/nForce430 (GA-M61P-S3 rev.1.0)
And a 750w PSU

I was running a 8500GT with a 500w PSU, put the new GPU in and, lol, it popped the PSU....
So put a 750w in now, but when i run Crysis (even on med settings) the game boots up, pick a new game, starts loading and about half a sec before the game begins......nothing........all power gone, have to boot up the comp again lol

Tried Dawn of war on max settings and ran that for about 2 hours with no probs...

My 8500GT would even take crysis on med so i'm at a bit of a loss...HELP!!!

EDIT: I'm running XP (32) and the latest drivers from the nvidia site...

I have ended up formatting, putting XP back in, then all the drivers again (no sparkly stuff lol), but still the same :-(

This is weird... a 500W PSU should have been able to take the upgrade to an 8800GT no problem.

Please tell me neither of these PSUs were budget. A cheap PSU will have voltages not quite at the + and - 12V, 5V and 3V they should be. The currents won't be right either. these differences can be enough to make you computer unstable, or even damage it.

From what you've said, that's all I can see for now.

Dawn of war doesn't have quite the detail of crysis so it could be the power the GPU's sucking is too much for the PSU.

The new 750w one is a Win-Power 750-ATX here are the specs if its any good:-
20 + 4 Pin Motherboard Power Connector
2x 4 Pin Motherboard power Connector
2x 8cm Silent Fan
1x PCI Express Power Connector
2x SATA Power Connector
8x Standard Power Connectors
2x Floppy Drive Power Connector

115VAC +5V 45A MAX
15A MAX +3.3V 32A MAX
60hz +12V 33A MAX
8A MAX -12V 1.0A MAX
50Hz +5V/SB 2.0A MAX

It was about £30, maybe should have gone for a better make and model?

I'm also running 2 extra fans, so my CPU fan, GPU fan A big one one the front of my case, two in this new PSU and the 2 extra ones:--
Evercools

So I assume over-heating shouldn't be a problem?

Im running almost the exact setup you are

i fried a 500 watt psu when i went to the 8800gt so i upgraded to a Antec True Power Trio 650 watt and been fine ever since.

The power supply you have shows good amperage but as Psymon pointed out the lower end products dont always perform as they say.

amd x2 6000 oc'd 3.3ghz
foxconn 8800gt oc'd
4 gig mushkin 800mhz oc'd 888mhz
gigabyte s series board
antec trio 650

Just looked at the antec trio 650 and wow they go for a price!!!!

Is there a bit of a cheaper alternative? like more the £40-£60 mark rather than £80?

Think I will transfer this PSU to my other comp and upgrade to a better one for my gaming comp...

£30 for a 750W PSU is very bad :(

Think of it this way. Would you rather pay £60 for a decent PSU now, or that much plus however much the 8800GT cost you because the PSU took the GPU with it? (and who knows what other components)

I must say I'm surprised your first PSU left everything in tact...

The more you pay, the more likely you are to get a PSU that is cool, quiet, efficient, and stable.

I wouldn't buy that one over .

Actually... I wouldn't buy that one. Powercool is not a company I've heard of so It's difficult to find out their reliability.

If it was a PC Power & Cooling PSU, it'd be a different story since they're alright.

See if you can save money on one that has a lower output wattage instead of lower build quality.
Use this to see what you really need.

OK I used that PSU cal and I need 416w, so a 450-500w should do?

So I think the plan is to go for a 450-500w of better quality rather than a cheaper 750w?

Quality over quantity...

Are Antec and Thermaltake any good?

Also while i'm here....any ideas what my next upgrade should be?

AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3.01Ghz
Gigabyte S-series MB (GA-M61P-S3 rev.1.0)
8800GT 512Mb (MSI NX8800GT)
4Gb Ocz ram 6400/800Mhz
120Gb HD and a 400Gb HD
DVD/CD burner

Nice choice that OCZ.

All you need understand with PSUs is you'll get what you pay for :)

These cheaper PSUs... imagine Intel said 'our processors can do 3.0Ghz' and then they blew before you even went near that. There'd be uproar. That's what's happening with cheaper PSUs and they're getting away with it.

I've never heard of iCute, but I don't think the PSU is the problem anymore.

Sounds more like an over heating GPU.

Agreed, BSOD isnt from the PSU. Its heat or memory. Did you happen to catch the error message?
